1 ויהי בעשתי־עשרה שנה באחד לחדש היה דבר־יהוה אלי לאמר׃

2 בן־אדם יען אשר־אמרה צר על־ירושלם האח נשברה דלתות העמים נסבה אלי אמלאה החרבה׃

3 לכן כה אמר אדני יהוה הנני עליך צר והעליתי עליך גוים רבים כהעלות הים לגליו׃

4 ושחתו חמות צר והרסו מגדליה וסחיתי עפרה ממנה ונתתי אותה לצחיח סלע׃

5 משטח חרמים תהיה בתוך הים כי אני דברתי נאם אדני יהוה והיתה לבז לגוים׃

6 ובנותיה אשר בשדה בחרב תהרגנה וידעו כי־אני יהוה׃ ף

7 כי כה אמר אדני יהוה הנני מביא אל־צר נבוכדראצר מלך־בבל מצפון מלך מלכים בסוס וברכב ובפרשים וקהל ועם־רב׃

8 בנותיך בשדה בחרב יהרג ונתן עליך דיק ושפך עליך סללה והקים עליך צנה׃

9 ומחי קבלו יתן בחמותיך ומגדלתיך יתץ בחרבותיו׃

10 משפעת סוסיו יכסך אבקם מקול פרש וגלגל ורכב תרעשנה חומותיך בבאו בשעריך כמבואי עיר מבקעה׃

11 בפרסות סוסיו ירמס את־כל־חוצותיך עמך בחרב יהרג ומצבות עזך לארץ תרד׃

12 ושללו חילך ובזזו רכלתך והרסו חומותיך ובתי חמדתך יתצו ואבניך ועציך ועפרך בתוך מים ישימו׃

13 והשבתי המון שיריך וקול כנוריך לא ישמע עוד׃

14 ונתתיך לצחיח סלע משטח חרמים תהיה לא תבנה עוד כי אני יהוה דברתי נאם אדני יהוה׃ ס

15 כה אמר אדני יהוה לצור הלא מקול מפלתך באנק חלל בהרג הרג בתוךך ירעשו האיים׃

16 וירדו מעל כסאותם כל נשיאי הים והסירו את־מעיליהם ואת־בגדי רקמתם יפשטו חרדות ילבשו על־הארץ ישבו וחרדו לרגעים ושממו עליך׃

17 ונשאו עליך קינה ואמרו לך איך אבדת נושבת מימים העיר ההללה אשר היתה חזקה בים היא וישביה אשר־נתנו חתיתם לכל־יושביה׃

18 עתה יחרדו האין יום מפלתך ונבהלו האיים אשר־בים מצאתך׃ ס

19 כי כה אמר אדני יהוה בתתי אתך עיר נחרבת כערים אשר לא־נושבו בהעלות עליך את־תהום וכסוך המים הרבים׃

20 והורדתיך את־יורדי בור אל־עם עולם והושבתיך בארץ תחתיות כחרבות מעולם את־יורדי בור למען לא תשבי ונתתי צבי בארץ חיים׃

21 בלהות אתנך ואינך ותבקשי ולא־תמצאי עוד לעולם נאם אדני יהוה׃ ס

1172. 'Dedan' means cognitions of lower celestial things that exist in ritual forms. This is clear from the following places in the Word: In Ezekiel,

The sons of Dedan were your traders, many islands were the merchandise of your hand; horns of ivory, and ebony they brought as your present. Ezekiel 27:15

'Horns of ivory, and ebony' in the internal sense means the exterior goods that constitute forms of worship or ritual. In the same prophet,

Dedan, she was your trader in chariot-cloaks, 1 Arabia and all the princes of Kedar Ezekiel 27:20-21.

Here 'chariot-cloaks' 1 in like manner means exterior goods, or those that constitute forms of ritual. In Jeremiah,

Their wisdom has become rotten. Flee! they have turned themselves away, they have taken themselves down to dwell in the deep, O inhabitants of Dedan. Jeremiah 49:7-8.

Here 'Dedan' in the proper sense stands for forms of ritual which have no internal worship, that is, no worship of the Lord from the heart within them, and which are spoken of as 'turning themselves back, and taking themselves down to dwell in the deep'. From the quotations above it is now clear that 'the sons of Cush' means cognitions of spiritual things, and 'the sons of Raamah' cognitions of celestial.

7 Of Edom. Thus says Yahweh of Armies: Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?

8 Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths, inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau on him, the time that I shall visit him.
