In ancient times their word was their bond. Nowadays we makes promises, but feel comfortable breaking them if we choose. Jesus tells us not to make promises, but rather just let our "Yes" be "Yes" and our "No" be "No." In order to do this though, we always have to always be true to our word, therefore making promises unnecessary.
