Zephaniah 1

Funda

The word of Jehovah which was unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

Consuming I will consume all from on the faces of the ground, says Jehovah.

I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowl of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut··off man from on the faces of the ground, says Jehovah.

And I will stretch··out My hand upon Judah, and upon all who dwell in Jerusalem; and I will cut··off from this place what··is··left of Baal, the name of the Chemarim* with the priests;

and those who worship the army of the heavens on the roofs; and those who worship and who promise to Jehovah, but who also promise by their king,

and who have turned··away from following after Jehovah, and those who have not sought Jehovah, and have not inquired for Him.

Keep··silent before the Lord Jehovih*, for the day of Jehovah is near; for Jehovah has prepared a sacrifice; He has sanctified those He has called.

And it shall be, in the day of the sacrifice of Jehovah, that I will visit upon the princes, and upon the sons of the king, and upon all clothed with foreign clothes.

And I will visit upon all who leap over the threshold on that day, who fill the house of their lords with violence and deceit.

And it shall be in that day, says Jehovah, that there shall be the voice of a cry from the Fish Gate, and a howling from the Second, and a great breaking from the hills.

Howl, ye who dwell in Maktesh, for all the people of commerce* are cut··off; all who carry silver are cut··off.

And it shall be at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and visit upon the men who are congealed on their lees*, who say in their heart, Jehovah will not do··good; neither will He do··evil.

And their belongings shall be for pillaging, and their houses a desolation; and they shall build houses, but not dwell in them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine of them.

The great day of Jehovah is near; it is near, and hastens exceedingly the voice of the day of Jehovah; there the hero shall yell bitterly.

This day is a day of wrath, a day of adversity and anguish, a day of vastation and vastating, a day of darkness and thick··darkness, a day of cloud and dense··darkness,

a day of a shophar* and a blast against the fortified cities, and against the tall towers.

And I will cause adversity to man, and they shall walk as the blind, for they have sinned against Jehovah; and their blood shall be spilled··out as dust, and their flesh as the excrement.

Neither their silver nor their gold shall be··able to rescue them in the day of the wrath of Jehovah; but all the land shall be devoured by the fire of His zeal, for He shall surely make a speedy, complete end of all who dwell in the land.
