Flesh

Still Life with Ham by Ferenc Ujházy

Flesh has several meanings just in its most obvious form. It can mean all living creatures as when the Lord talks about the flood "destroying all flesh"(Gen. 7:21), or it can mean all of mankind (Gen. 6:3 ), or it can mean something soft and yielding such as the heart of flesh to replace the stony heart (Ezek. 11:19 ) But spiritually it means the loves that dwell in the will of a person, and seem to belong to that person, to be that person. This person may be one who has not started to regenerate (or never will), or one who is in the middle of the process, or one who is near the end. In the highest sense flesh means the loves that are in the Lord's will, which are divine. This meaning is clear in the Lord's words in the gospel of John (John 6:53-56 )

Everyone has such a package of loves, and it can be pretty much evil, mixed, or pretty much good, just as similarly, everyone has flesh. Our spiritual job while living our life is to change that package, one affection at a time, from bad to good. If we try to do this the Lord will help us

When we start, our loves are selfish, and spiritually we are dead, just like the bones that Ezekiel saw, but as we persist in turning away from our evils, the Lord will cause the bones to be gathered and flesh to come upon them, soft and loving, and we will come alive with new outward turning loves to replace the old selfish ones.

So the meaning of "flesh" can change from our original will, as it's dismantled piece by piece at our instigation and the Lord's help, to the new will that eventually replaces it. This is why in some sacrifices of the Israelitish church the flesh was to be burnt up, and in others the flesh could be eaten by the priests. That was burned which represented the old original will, but that which could be eaten represented the new.
