Psalms 40

1 To the victor; of David, a psalm.
2 Waiting, I waited··for Jehovah;
and He inclined unto me and heard my outcry;

2 3 and He brought· me ·up from the pit of vastation, from the mud of the mire;
and He raised··up my foot upon a rock; He established my steps.

3 4 And He gave in my mouth a new song, praise to our God;
many shall see, and fear, and shall trust in Jehovah.

4 5 Happy is the mighty··man who sets Jehovah as his trust,
and turns· not his ·face to those who bear· themselves ·up, nor to those who turn··aside··to a lie.

5 6 Many are Thy wonders and Thy thoughts toward us, which Thou, O Jehovah my God, hast done;
there is none to be valued with Thee;
I will tell and speak of them; they are· more ·numerous than can be numbered.

6 7 In sacrifice and gift··offering, Thou dost not delight; thou hast unplugged* my ears for me;
For burnt··offering and a sacrifice for sin, Thou hast not asked.

7 8 Then said I, Behold I have come;
in the scroll of the book it is written concerning me,

8 9 I delight to do Thy good··pleasure, O my God;
and Thy law is in the midst of my bowels.

9 10 I have published justice in the great assembly;
behold, I do not hold··back my lips;
O Jehovah, Thou knowest.

10 11 I have not covered Thy justice in the midst of my heart; I have talked··of Thy faithfulness and Thy salvation;
I have not concealed Thy mercy and Thy truth from the great assembly.

11 12 Thou, O Jehovah, wilt not hold··back Thy compassions from me;
let Thy mercy and Thy truth continually preserve me.

12 13 For evils have enclosed me until they are without number;
my iniquities have overtaken me, and I am· not ·able to see;
they are· more ·numerous than the hairs of my head,
and my heart has forsaken me.

13 14 Be well··pleased, O Jehovah, to rescue me;
Jehovah, hurry to my help.

14 15 Let those be··ashamed and blush together, who seek··after my soul to consume it;
let them be turned··away backward and be humiliated who delight when evil befalls me.

15 16 Let them be··desolate in consequence of their shame,
who say to me, Aha, aha.

16 17 Let all those who seek Thee have··joy and be··glad in Thee;
let those who love Thy salvation say continually, Jehovah be magnified.

17 18 But I am afflicted and needy; the Lord will think upon me;
my Help and my Deliverer art Thou; O my God, delay not!
