And the Philistines gathered their camps to the battle, and they were gathered at Socoh, which is in Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.

And Saul and the men◦ of Israel were gathered and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set· the battle ·in··array to meet the Philistines.

And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, and a ravine was between them.
4
And there went··out a man◦, a champion, from the camp of the Philistines, his name was Goliath of Gath, he was six cubits and a span tall.
5
And a helmet of bronze was on his head, and he◦ was clothed with a shirion* of mail◦*; and the weight of the shirion was five thousand shekels of bronze.

And greaves of bronze were on his feet, and a javelin of bronze between his shoulders◦.

And the wood of his spear was as a beam◦ of a weaver; and the blade of his spear was of six hundred shekels of iron. And he who was bearing the buckler walked before him.

And he stood and called unto▵ the battle array of Israel, and said unto them, Why have you gone··out to set· the battle ·in··array? Am not I▵ the Philistine and you◦, servants to Saul? Choose a man◦ for you, and let him come··down to▵ me.

If he be··able to fight with me and to smite me, then will we be your servants; but if I◦ prevail◦ against him and smite him, then shall you be our servants, and serve us.

And the Philistine said, I◦ have··reproached the battle array of Israel this day; give me a man◦ and let us fight together.

And Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, and they were··dismayed and feared exceedingly.
12
And David was the son of a man◦, an Ephrathite; this man was from Bethlehem of Judah, and his name was Jesse; and he had◦ eight sons; and in the days of Saul the man◦ was··old, coming among◦ men◦.

And they went◦, the three eldest sons of Jesse, going after Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons that went into the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and the second, Abinadab, and the third, Shammah.

And David was the youngest◦; and the three eldest went◦ after Saul.

But David went◦ and returned from Saul to pasture the flock of his father at Bethlehem.

And the Philistine approached, getting··up··early in the morning and in the evening, and stood··forth forty days.
17
And Jesse said to David his son, Take now◦ for thy brothers an ephah of this parched··grain, and these ten loaves of bread, and run to the camp to thy brothers;
18
and bring these ten cheeses from milk to the commander◦ of the thousand, and take··note of the peace of thy brothers, and take their surety.
19
And Saul and they◦, and every man◦ of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

And David got··up··early in the morning, and left* the flock with◦ the keeper, and carried the food and went, as◦ Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the place of wagons; and the host was going··out to▵ the battle array, and shouted in the battle.

And Israel and the Philistines set· themselves ·in··array, battle array to meet battle array.

and David abandoned the vessels from upon him in the hand of the keeper of the vessels, and ran to the battle array; and he came and asked his brothers of their peace.

And he◦ was speaking with them, and behold, a man◦, the champion, Goliath the Philistine was his name, from Gath, came··up from out of the battle array of the Philistines, and spoke according··to these words; and David heard.

And all the men◦ of Israel, when they saw the man◦, fled before him and feared exceedingly.
25
And a man◦ of Israel said, Have you seen this man◦ coming··up? for to reproach Israel he is coming··up. And it shall be, that the man◦ who smites him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make the house of his father free in Israel.

And David said to▵ the men◦ standing with him, saying, What shall be done to the man◦ that smites this Philistine, and removes the reproach from upon Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should reproach the battle array of the living God?

And according··to this word, the people said to him, saying, Thus shall it be done to the man◦ that smites him.

And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to▵ the men◦; and Eliab’s anger was··fierce against David, and he said, Why camest· thou ·down hither? and with whom hast thou abandoned that small flock in the wilderness? I◦ know thy presumptuousness and the evil of thy heart; for thou art come··down that thou mightest see the battle.

And David said, What have I done now? Is there not a reason?
30
And he turned··around from the one beside him to▵ another next··to him, and said according··to this word, and the people returned him a word as the first word.
31
And the words were heard which David spoke, and they told them before Saul, and he took him.
32
And David said to▵ Saul, Let not the heart of man fall on··account··of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33
And Saul said to▵ David, Thou art· not ·able to go to▵ this Philistine to fight with him; for thou◦ art a lad, and he◦ is a man◦ of war from his youth.
34
And David said to▵ Saul, Thy servant was shepherding for my father in his flock, and there came a lion and a bear and carried an animal··of··the··flock from the drove.
35
And I went··out after him, and smote him, and rescued it from his mouth; and he arose against me, and I held· his beard ·firmly, and smote him and put· him ·to··death.
36
Thy servant smote both◦ the lion and◦ the bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them◦, for he has reproached the battle array of the living God.
37
And David said, Jehovah, who rescued me from the hand of the lion, and from the hand of the bear, He◦ will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to▵ David, Go, and Jehovah be with thee.
38
And Saul clothed David with his robe, and he put◦ a helmet◦ of bronze on his head; and clothed him with a shirion,
39
and David girded his sword on his robe, and he would◦ go, but◦ he had not proved them. And David said to▵ Saul, I am· not ·able to go with these, for I have not proved them. And David removed them from off himself.
40
And he took his stick in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and set them in the shepherd’s vessel that he had◦, and in which he collected them; and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.
41
And the Philistine went, walking and drawing··near to▵ David; and the man◦ bearing the buckler was before him.
42
And the Philistine looked and saw David, and he despised him, for he was a lad and ruddy, with a beautiful appearance.
43
And the Philistine said unto▵ David, Am I▵ a dog, that thou◦ comest to▵ me with sticks? And the Philistine reviled David by his gods.
44
And the Philistine said to▵ David, Go to▵ me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the field.
45
And David said to▵ the Philistine, Thou◦ comest to▵ me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I▵ come to▵ thee in the name of Jehovah of Armies, the God of the battle arrays of Israel whom thou hast reproached.
46
This day will Jehovah shut thee up into my hand; and I will smite thee, and remove thy head from upon thee; and I will give the corpse of the camp of the Philistines This day to the fowl of the heavens and to the wild··animals of the earth; and all the earth shall know that there··is a God for Israel.
47
And all this assembly shall know that Jehovah saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is Jehovah’s, and He will give you into our hand.
48
And it was, that the Philistine arose, and went and came··near to meet David, and David hastened and ran toward the battle array to meet the Philistine.
49
And David put··forth◦ his hand to▵ the bag, and took thence a stone, and slung it, and smote the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the earth.
50
And David prevailed over* the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine and put· him ·to··death; and there was no sword in the hand of David.
51
And David ran and stood on the Philistine, and took his sword and drew▵ it from its sheath, and put· him ·to··death and cut··off his head with it. And the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, and they fled.

And the men◦ of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to◦ the valley◦ and to◦ the gates of Ekron. And the slain of the Philistines fell by the way to Sharaim and even··to Gath and even··to Ekron.

And the sons of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they pillaged their camps.

And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; and his arms he put in his tent.
55
And when Saul saw David go··out to meet the Philistine, he said to▵ Abner the commander◦ of the army, Abner, whose son is this lad? And Abner said, As thy soul lives, O king, if only I knew.
56
And the king said, Ask thou◦ whose son this adolescent is.
57
And as David returned from smiting the Philistine, Abner took him in before the face of Saul, and the head of the Philistine was in his hand.
58
And Saul said unto▵ him, Whose son art thou◦, lad? And David said, The son of thy servant Jesse, the Bethlehemite.
