THE word parable comes from a Greek verb that means "to compare". In a parable, things are compared that - in their own nature - are different, but which in some points still have a resemblance. The parables of Jesus Christ are not mere comparisons, but real correspondences between natural things and spiritual things. When He spoke in parables, Jesus expressed eternal spiritual truths using images of natural things relating to this world. In this figurative language, he impressed those truths beautifully on the minds of His hearers.
