Kings 14

Studie

At that time, Abijah the son of Jeroboam became··sick.

And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray, and change thyself, and they will not know that thou art the wife of Jeroboam; and go to Shiloh; behold there is Ahijah the prophet. He spoke concerning me, that I should be king over this people.

And take in thy hand ten breads, and speckled loaves, and a jar of honey, and come to him; he shall tell thee what shall become of the lad.

And the wife of Jeroboam did so, and she arose and went to Shiloh, and came··into the house of Ahijah. and Ahijah was· not ·able to see; for his eyes were fixed* on account of his being gray-haired.

And Jehovah said to Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam comes to inquire of thee a word as to her son, for he is sick; as this and as that shalt thou speak to her; and it will be when she comes··in, that she will make· herself ·unrecognizable.

And it was, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came··in at the entrance, that he said, Come··in, thou wife of Jeroboam, why is this that thou makest· thyself ·unrecognizable? and I am sent to thee with a hard word.

Go, say to Jeroboam, Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel; Because I exalted thee from the midst of the people, and put thee as monarch over My people Israel;

and rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it to thee; and thou hast not been as My servant David, who kept My commandments, and who walked after Me with all his heart, to do that only which was upright in My eyes,

but hast done··evil more than all that were before thee, and hast gone and made thee other gods, and molten images to provoke Me, and hast cast Me behind thy body,

therefore, behold, I bring evil against the house of Jeroboam, and will cut··off from Jeroboam him who urinates against a wall, him who is restrained and him that is forsaken in Israel; and I shall sweep··away the posterity of the house of Jeroboam, as one sweeps··away the excrement until it is entirely gone.

Him who dies of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat, and him who dies in the field shall the fowl of the heavens eat; for Jehovah has spoken it.

And thou, arise, go to thy house; when thy feet come··in the city, then the child will··die.

And all Israel shall wail for him and bury him; for he alone of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is··found something good toward Jehovah, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.

And Jehovah will raise· Him ·up a king over Israel, who shall cut··off the house of Jeroboam this day; and when? Even now.

And Jehovah will smite Israel, as the reed shifts in the waters, and will pluck··up Israel from on this good ground, which He gave to their fathers, and will disperse them across the river; because they have made their groves, provoking Jehovah.

And he will give over Israel, because··of the sins of Jeroboam, which he has sinned, and which he made Israel to sin.

And the wife of Jeroboam arose, and went, and came to Tirzah; she came to the doorway of the house, and the lad died.

And all Israel buried him and bewailed him, according to the word of Jehovah, which He spoke by the hand of His servant, Ahijah the prophet.

And the remaining words concerning Jeroboam, how he fought and how he reigned, behold they are written in the book of the words concerning the days of the kings of Israel.

And the days which Jeroboam reigned were twenty and two years, and he lay··down with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his stead.

And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. A son of forty and one years was Rehoboam when he became··king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Jehovah had chosen out··of all the tribes of Israel, to set His name there; and the name of his mother was Naamah, the Ammonitess.

And Judah did evil in the eyes of Jehovah, and they made Him zealous with the sins which they sinned more than all that their fathers had done.

And they, even they, built for themselves high··places, and pillars and groves on every lofty hill, and under every green tree.

And there were also sodomites in the land; they did according to all the abominations of the nations which Jehovah dispossessed before the sons of Israel.

And it was, in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, that Shishak, king of Egypt came··up against Jerusalem;

and he took the treasures of the house of Jehovah, and the treasures of the house of the king, and took all; and he took all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

And King Rehoboam made in· their ·stead shields of bronze, and appointed them into the hands of the princes of the runners who kept the entrance of the house of the king.

And it was so, that as··often as the king came··into the house of Jehovah, the runners bore them, and returned them to the little··chamber of the runners.

And the remaining words concerning Rehoboam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the words concerning the days of the kings of Judah?

And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days.

And Rehoboam lay··down with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and the name of his mother was Naamah the Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in· his ·stead.
