1 זה ספר תולדת אדם ביום ברא אלהים אדם בדמות אלהים עשה אתו׃

2 זכר ונקבה בראם ויברך אתם ויקרא את־שםם אדם ביום הבראם׃ ס

3 ויחי אדם שלשים ומאת שנה ויולד בדמותו כצלמו ויקרא את־שמו שת׃

4 ויהיו ימי־אדם אחרי הולידו את־שת שמנה מאת שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃

5 ויהיו כל־ימי אדם אשר־חי תשע מאות שנה ושלשים שנה וימת׃ ס

6 ויחי־שת חמש שנים ומאת שנה ויולד את־אנוש׃

7 ויחי־שת אחרי הולידו את־אנוש שבע שנים ושמנה מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃

8 ויהיו כל־ימי־שת שתים עשרה שנה ותשע מאות שנה וימת׃ ס

9 ויחי אנוש תשעים שנה ויולד את־קיןן׃

10 ויחי אנוש אחרי הולידו את־קיןן חמש עשרה שנה ושמנה מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃

11 ויהיו כל־ימי אנוש חמש שנים ותשע מאות שנה וימת׃ ס

12 ויחי קיןן שבעים שנה ויולד את־מהללאל׃

13 ויחי קיןן אחרי הולידו את־מהללאל ארבעים שנה ושמנה מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃

14 ויהיו כל־ימי קיןן עשר שנים ותשע מאות שנה וימת׃ ס

15 ויחי מהללאל חמש שנים וששים שנה ויולד את־ירד׃

16 ויחי מהללאל אחרי הולידו את־ירד שלשים שנה ושמנה מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃

17 ויהיו כל־ימי מהללאל חמש ותשעים שנה ושמנה מאות שנה וימת׃ ס

18 ויחי־ירד שתים וששים שנה ומאת שנה ויולד את־חנוך׃

19 ויחי־ירד אחרי הולידו את־חנוך שמנה מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃

20 ויהיו כל־ימי־ירד שתים וששים שנה ותשע מאות שנה וימת׃ ף

21 ויחי חנוך חמש וששים שנה ויולד את־מתושלח׃

22 ויתהלך חנוך את־האלהים אחרי הולידו את־מתושלח שלש מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃

23 ויהי כל־ימי חנוך חמש וששים שנה ושלש מאות שנה׃

24 ויתהלך חנוך את־האלהים ואיננו כי־לקח אתו אלהים׃ ף

25 ויחי מתושלח שבע ושמנים שנה ומאת שנה ויולד את־למך׃

26 ויחי מתושלח אחרי הולידו את־למך שתים ושמונים שנה ושבע מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃

27 ויהיו כל־ימי מתושלח תשע וששים שנה ותשע מאות שנה וימת׃ ף

28 ויחי־למך שתים ושמנים שנה ומאת שנה ויולד בן׃

29 ויקרא את־שמו נח לאמר זה* ינחמנו ממעשנו ומעצבון ידינו מן־האדמה אשר אררה יהוה׃

30 ויחי־למך אחרי הולידו את־נח חמש ותשעים שנה וחמש מאת שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃

31 ויהי כל־ימי־למך שבע ושבעים שנה ושבע מאות שנה וימת׃ ס

32 ויהי־נח בן־חמש מאות שנה ויולד נח את־שם את־חם ואת־יפת׃

575. 'The days of man were to be a hundred and twenty years' means that he ought to have remnants of faith. At verses 3, 4 of the previous chapter it was stated that 'days' and 'years' meant periods of time and states, and that the most ancient people meant states and changes in the states of the Church by the numbers which they compounded variously. The exact nature of their computation of things that had to do with the Church is one of those matters that have been lost. Here in like manner numbers of years occur, whose meaning nobody can possibly know unless he knows what is concealed in each of the numbers 1-12, and so on. It is quite apparent that they embody some arcanum or other, for in saying that they would live a hundred and twenty years this verse contradicts those that go before it. Nor subsequently did they live a mere hundred and twenty years, as is clear from what Chapter 11 says about those who lived after the Flood - that Shem lived 500 years after he beget Arpachshad, Arpachshad 407 years after he beget Shelah, Shelah 403 years as well after he beget Eber, and Eber 430 years after he beget Peleg. Chapter 9:28 says that Noah lived 350 years after the Flood; and other examples could be given. What the number 120 embodies however is clear merely from the numbers to and 12, for 120 is the product of 10 times 12. It means remnants of faith. In the Word the number ten has the same meaning as tenths, representing remnants which are preserved by the Lord within the internal man. And since these are the Lord's alone they are holy. The number twelve means faith, that is, all things belonging to faith in their entirety. So this composite number means remnants of faith.
