Daniel 9

1 Im ersten Jahre Darius', des Sohnes Ahasveros', aus dem Samen der Meder, welcher über das Reich der Chaldäer König geworden war,

2 im ersten Jahre seiner Regierung merkte ich, Daniel, in den Schriften auf die Zahl der Jahre, betreffs welcher das Wort Jehovas zu dem Propheten Jeremia geschehen war, daß nämlich siebzig Jahre für die Verwüstung Jerusalems vollendet werden sollten.

3 Und ich richtete mein Angesicht zu Gott, dem Herrn, um ihn mit Gebet und Flehen zu suchen, in Fasten und Sacktuch und Asche.

4 Und ich betete zu Jehova, meinem Gott, und ich bekannte und sprach: Ach, Herr! Du großer und furchtbarer Gott, der den Bund und die Güte denen bewahrt, die ihn lieben und seine Gebote halten!

5 Wir haben gesündigt und verkehrt und gesetzlos gehandelt, und wir haben uns empört und sind von deinen Geboten und von deinen Rechten abgewichen.

6 Und wir haben nicht auf deine Knechte, die Propheten, gehört, welche in deinem Namen zu unseren Königen, unseren Fürsten und unseren Vätern und zu allem Volke des Landes geredet haben.

7 Dein, o Herr, ist die Gerechtigkeit, unser aber die Beschämung des Angesichts, wie es an diesem Tage ist: der Männer von Juda und der Bewohner von Jerusalem, und des ganzen Israel, der Nahen und der Fernen, in allen Ländern, wohin du sie vertrieben hast wegen ihrer Treulosigkeit, die sie gegen dich begangen haben.

8 Jehova! Unser ist die Beschämung des Angesichts, unserer Könige, unserer Fürsten und unserer Väter, weil wir gegen dich gesündigt haben.

9 Des Herrn, unseres Gottes, sind die Erbarmungen und die Vergebungen; denn wir haben uns gegen ihn empört,

10 und wir haben der Stimme Jehovas, unseres Gottes, nicht gehorcht, um in seinen Gesetzen zu wandeln, welche er uns durch seine Knechte, die Propheten, vorgelegt hat.

11 Und ganz Israel hat dein Gesetz übertreten und ist abgewichen, so daß es deiner Stimme nicht gehorcht hat. Und so hat sich der Fluch und der Schwur über uns ergossen, welcher im Gesetz Moses, des Knechtes Gottes, geschrieben steht, weil wir gegen ihn gesündigt haben.

12 Und er hat seine Worte erfüllt, die er über uns und über unsere Richter geredet hat, welche uns richteten, indem er ein großes Unglück über uns brachte; so daß unter dem ganzen Himmel keines geschehen ist wie dasjenige, welches an Jerusalem geschehen ist.

13 So wie es im Gesetz Moses geschrieben steht, ist all dieses Unglück über uns gekommen. Und wir flehten Jehova, unseren Gott, nicht an, daß wir von unseren Missetaten umgekehrt wären und Einsicht erlangt hätten für deine Wahrheit.

14 Und so hat Jehova über das Unglück gewacht und es über uns kommen lassen. Denn Jehova, unser Gott, ist gerecht in allen seinen Taten, die er getan hat; aber wir haben seiner Stimme nicht gehorcht.

15 Und nun, Herr, unser Gott, der du dein Volk aus dem Lande Ägypten mit starker Hand herausgeführt und dir einen Namen gemacht hast, wie es an diesem Tage ist, wir haben gesündigt, wir haben gesetzlos gehandelt.

16 Herr, nach allen deinen Gerechtigkeiten laß doch deinen Zorn und deinen Grimm sich wenden von deiner Stadt Jerusalem, deinem heiligen Berge! Denn wegen unserer Sünden und der Missetaten unserer Väter sind Jerusalem und dein Volk zum Hohne geworden allen denen, die uns umgeben.

17 Und nun höre, unser Gott, auf das Gebet deines Knechtes und auf sein Flehen; und um des Herrn willen laß dein Angesicht leuchten über dein verwüstetes Heiligtum!

18 Neige, mein Gott, dein Ohr und höre! Tue deine Augen auf und sieh unsere Verwüstungen und die Stadt, welche nach deinem Namen genannt ist! Denn nicht um unserer Gerechtigkeiten willen legen wir unser Flehen vor dir nieder, sondern um deiner vielen Erbarmungen willen.

19 Herr, höre! Herr, vergib! Herr, merke auf und handle; zögere nicht, um deiner selbst willen, mein Gott! Denn deine Stadt und dein Volk sind nach deinem Namen genannt.

20 Während ich noch redete und betete, und meine Sünde und die Sünde meines Volkes Israel bekannte, und mein Flehen vor Jehova, meinem Gott, für den heiligen Berg meines Gottes niederlegte,

21 während ich noch redete im Gebet, da kam der Mann Gabriel, den ich im Anfang im Gesicht, als ich ganz ermattet war, gesehen hatte, zu mir her zur Zeit des Abendopfers.

22 Und er gab mir Verständnis und redete mit mir und sprach: Daniel, jetzt bin ich ausgegangen, um dich Verständnis zu lehren.

23 Im Anfang deines Flehens ist ein Wort ausgegangen, und ich bin gekommen, um es dir kundzutun; denn du bist ein Vielgeliebter. So merke auf das Wort, und verstehe das Gesicht:

24 Siebzig Wochen sind über dein Volk und über deine heilige Stadt bestimmt, um die Übertretung zum Abschluß zu bringen und den Sünden ein Ende zu machen, und die Ungerechtigkeit zu sühnen und eine ewige Gerechtigkeit einzuführen, und Gesicht und Propheten zu versiegeln, und ein Allerheiligstes zu salben.

25 So wisse denn und verstehe: Vom Ausgehen des Wortes, Jerusalem wiederherzustellen und zu bauen, bis auf den Messias, den Fürsten, sind sieben Wochen und zweiundsechzig Wochen. Straßen und Gräben werden wiederhergestellt und gebaut werden, und zwar in Drangsal der Zeiten.

26 Und nach den zweiundsechzig Wochen wird der Messias weggetan werden und nichts haben. Und das Volk des kommenden Fürsten wird die Stadt und das Heiligtum zerstören, und das Ende davon wird durch die überströmende Flut sein; und bis ans Ende: Krieg, Festbeschlossenes von Verwüstungen.

27 Und er wird einen festen Bund mit den Vielen schließen für eine Woche; und zur Hälfte der Woche wird er Schlachtopfer und Speisopfer aufhören lassen. Und wegen der Beschirmung der Greuel wird ein Verwüster kommen, und zwar bis Vernichtung und Festbeschlossenes über das Verwüstete ausgegossen werden.

9306. 'Take notice of his face' means holy fear. This is clear from the meaning of 'taking notice of the face', when it has reference to the Lord, whom 'the angel' is used to mean to here, as fearing that He may be angry on account of evils, or provoked on account of transgressions, as below; and fearing these things is holy fear. Regarding this fear, see 2826, 3718, 3719, 5459, 5534, 7280, 7788, 8816, 8925. The words 'taking notice of his face' are used because 'the face' means the interior things that constitute a person's life, thus his thought and affection, and in particular his faith and love. The reason for this is that the face has been fashioned so that it can produce an image of a person's interiors. It has been so fashioned to the end that those things which belong to the internal man may appear within the external, thus to the end that those things which belong to the spiritual world can be visualized in the natural world and so have an effect on one's neighbour. It is well known that the face presents visually, or as if in a mirror, what a person thinks and loves. This is so with honest people's faces, and especially with angels' faces, see 1999, 2434, 3527, 3573, 4066, 4326, 4796-4799, 5102, 5695, 6604, 8248-8250. For this reason 'face' in the original language is a general term that is used to describe the feelings a person has which reveal themselves, such as those of indulgence, favour, goodwill, helpfulness, or kindness, and also lack of pity, anger, or vengeance. So it is that in that language when this word is coupled with another it means beside, with, in front of, on account of, or else against, thus whatever is within, from, for, or against the person himself. For as has been stated, 'the face' is a person's true self, or that present within a person which reveals itself.

[2] All this enables one to know what is meant by the face of Jehovah, or 'the face of the angel', who in this instance is the Lord in respect of His Divine Human - namely the Divine Good of Divine Love, and the Divine Truth emanating from that Divine Good, since these reside within Jehovah or the Lord, come from Him, indeed are Himself, see 222, 223, 5585. From this it is evident what 'the face of Jehovah' means in the Blessing,

Jehovah make His face shine upon you and be merciful to you. Jehovah lift up His face upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:25-26.

In David,

God be merciful to us and bless us and make His face shine upon us. Psalms 67:1.

The like may be seen in Psalms 80:3, 7, 19; 119:134-135; Daniel 9:17; and in other places.

[3] So it is that the Lord's Divine Human is called 'the angel of Jehovah's face' in Isaiah,

I will cause the mercies of Jehovah to be remembered. He has rewarded 1 them according to His mercies, and according to the abundance of His mercies; and He became their Saviour. And the angel of His face saved them; in His love and in His pity He redeemed them. Isaiah 63:7-9.

The reason why the Lord's Divine Human is called 'the angel of Jehovah's face' is that the Divine Human is the Divine Himself facially, that is, in outward form, as also the Lord teaches in John,

If you know Me you know My Father also, and from now on you know Him and have seen Him. Philip said, Show us the Father. Jesus said to him, Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father. I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me. John 14:7-11.

[4] 'Jehovah's (or the Lord's) face' also means anger, vengeance, punishment, and ill. It does so because simple people, in accepting the general idea that all things come from God, believe that even ill, especially the misery of punishment, comes from Him. For this reason - in keeping with that general idea, and also with appearances - anger, vengeance, punishment, or ill is attributed to Jehovah the Lord, when in fact the Lord is not the source of them but man. Regarding this, see 1861, 2447, 5798, 6071, 6832, 6991, 6997, 7533, 7632, 7877, 7926, 8197, 8227, 8228, 8282, 8483, 8632, 8875, 9128. This kind of meaning appears here in 'take notice of his face, lest you provoke him, for he will not bear your transgression', and also in Leviticus,

Whoever eats any blood, I will set My face against the soul eating blood and will cut him off from among his people. Leviticus 17:10.

In Jeremiah,

I have set My face against the city for ill and not for good. Jeremiah 21:10.

And in David,

Jehovah's face is against evildoers, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. Psalms 34:16.

381. Verse 8. And I saw, and behold a pale horse, signifies the understanding of the Word then become nought in consequence of evils of life and then of falsities therefrom. This and the following chapter treats of the successive states of the church, that is, of the men of the church in respect to their spiritual life; and their first state is described by "the white horse," the second by "the red horse," the third by "the black horse," and the fourth by "the pale horse." That "the white horse" signifies the understanding of truth from the Word may be seen above n. 355; that "the red horse" signifies the understanding of the Word lost in respect to good n. 364; that "the black horse" signifies the understanding of the Word lost in respect to truth n. 372; from which it is clear that "the pale horse" signifies the understanding of the Word become nought in consequence of evils of life and of falsities therefrom. For when the understanding of the Word is lost in respect to good and in respect to truth, it follows that the understanding of the Word becomes nought; and for the reason that the evil of life and the falsity therefrom reign. It is said the evil of life and the falsity therefrom, because where there is the evil of life there also is falsity, for these make one in man's spirit: it is said in man's spirit, because an evil man equally with a good man can do good and speak truth; but an evil man does this merely from the natural man and thence from the body, while within him, that is, in his spirit, there is no will of good and thus no understanding of truth, therefore neither good nor truth; this is especially evident when such persons become spirits; then, because they are in the spirit, they will nothing but evil and speak nothing but falsity. This is what is here meant by "the pale horse." That "a horse" signifies the understanding may be seen above n. 355; here the understanding of the Word, because "he that sat upon the horse" signifies the Word n. 373.

[2] "Pale" signifies the evil of life and the falsity therefrom, thus "the pale horse" the understanding of the Word become nought in consequence of evils of life and of the falsities therefrom, because paleness indicates and thence signifies the absence of life or deprivation of life, here absence and deprivation of spiritual life, which occurs when there is the evil of life in place of the good of life, and the falsity of faith in place of the truth of faith, for there is then no spiritual life. Spiritual life means the life of heaven, and in the Word this also is called simply "life;" but life not spiritual is such a life as those have who are in hell, and this in the Word is also called "death." That "the pale horse" signifies spiritual death is evident, too, from the rest of this verse, for it is said, "he that sat upon this horse his name was Death, and Hell followed with him."

[3] "Paleness" or "pale" has a like meaning in Jeremiah:

Ask ye, I pray, and see whether a male doth bring forth? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins as one bringing forth, and all faces are turned into paleness? (Jeremiah 30:6).

No one can know what these words involve unless he knows the signification of "bringing forth," "male," "man" [vir], "hands on the loins," and "faces." This is said of those who wish to acquire for themselves love and faith from self-intelligence; to acquire these for oneself is signified by "bringing forth;" "male" and "man" signify intelligence, here self-intelligence; "hands on the loins" signifies hatching these out, and "faces" signify love and faith; for angels and spirits have faces such as their love and faith are, for the affection of good, which is love, and the affection of truth, which is faith, manifest themselves in their faces; therefore "whether a male doth bring forth" signifies whether anyone can acquire for himself the good of love and the truth of faith from self-intelligence. "I see every man with his hands on his loins as one about to bring forth" signifies that everyone is striving to hatch these out from what is his own [ex proprio]; and "all faces are turned into paleness" signifies that thence there is no good or truth, but evil and falsity, thus no life, but spiritual death. This is signified by "paleness of the face." (That "conceptions," "travailings," and "births," in the Word signify spiritual conceptions, travailings, and births which are of love and faith, see Arcana Coelestia 3860, 3868, 3915, 3919, 3965, 9325; that the "male" or "masculine" signifies truth, and intelligence therefrom, n. 749, 2046, 4005, 7838; likewise "man" [vir], n. 749, 1007, 3134, 3309, 3459, 9007; that "the face" signifies the interiors of the mind, thus the things of love and faith, n. 1999, 2434, 3527, 4066, 4796, 5102, 9306, 9546; that the faces with angels are the forms of their affections, see Heaven and Hell 47, 457, 459, 481, 552, 553.)

[4] "To wax pale" has a like meaning in Isaiah:

Jacob shall not be ashamed, neither shall his face wax pale (Isaiah 29:22).

"Jacob" means those who are of the church, and "his face shall not wax pale" means that such shall not be in evils and falsities, but in goods and truths. "Paleness" signifies privation of spiritual life, which occurs when there is no good and truth, but evil and falsity, because when man is deprived of vital heat he then waxes pale and becomes an image of death, as is the case in extreme terrors, the same as when he dies; but when a man dies spiritually his face either becomes red like a coal fire or pale like that of a corpse; thus the infernals appear in the light of heaven.
