Lamentations 4

א How is the gold obscured, the good fine··gold changed! The stones of the sanctuary are spilled··out at the head of all the streets.

ב The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine··gold; how are they thought of as pottery jugs made by the hands of the potter!

ג Even the whales set··free the breast; they nurse their whelps. The daughter of My people has become cruel, as the owls in the wilderness.

ד The tongue of the nursing infant sticks to his palate in thirst: the babes ask bread, and no··one offers* it to them.

ה They who ate for pleasure are desolate in the streets; they who were cared··for upon scarlet embrace dunghills.

ו And the iniquity of the daughter of my people is··greater than the sin of Sodom, which* was overturned as in a moment, and hands travailed not in her.

ז Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were redder of bone than gems*, their polishing was as sapphire.

ח their form is darker than blackness; they are not recognized in the streets; their skin sticks onto their bones; it is··dried··up, it has become as wood.

ט They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with famine; for they flow, thrust··through from want of the bounty of the field.

י The hands of the pitiful* women have cooked their own children so that they were nourishment for them in the breaking of the daughter of my people.

כ Jehovah has completed His fury; He has spilled··out His fierce anger, and has kindled a fire in Zion, and it has devoured the foundations thereof.

ל The kings of the earth, and all those who dwell··in the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have come into the gates of Jerusalem.

מ For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her,

נ they have gone··to··and··fro blind in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood; what they are· not ·able to pollute, they touch with their clothing.

ס Turn· ye ·aside*, he is unclean, they called to them; Turn· ye ·aside, turn· ye ·aside, touch ye not; when they fled away and went··to··and··fro, they said among the nations, They shall not continue to sojourn there.

פ The face of Jehovah has parted them; He will not again look on them; they accepted not the faces of priests, they were· not ·gracious to elders.

ע Yet for us, our eyes are all··consumed waiting for our help in··vain; in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

צ They hunt our strides, to keep us from going in our avenues; our end is··near; our days are··fulfilled, for our end has come.

ק Our pursuers are swifter than the eagles of the heavens; they chased us over the mountains, they set··an··ambush for us in the wilderness.

ר The wind of our nostrils, the anointed of Jehovah, was taken in their ditches, of whom we said, In His shadow we shall live among the nations.

ש Have··joy and be··glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass··through unto thee; thou shalt be··drunken, and shalt make· thyself ·naked.

ת Thine iniquity is finished, O daughter of Zion; He will not again exile thee. He will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; He will reveal thy sins.
