¹ อยู่มาเมื่อซามูเอลแก่แล้ว ท่านได้ตั้งพวกบุตรชายของท่านให้วินิจฉัยอิสราเอล

² บุตรหัวปีของท่านชื่อโยเอล และคนที่สองชื่ออาบียาห์ ทั้งสองเป็นผู้วินิจฉัยในเมืองเบเออร์เชบา

³ แต่บุตรชายของท่านมิได้ดำเนินในทางของท่าน ได้เลี่ยงไปหากำไร เขารับสินบนและบิดเบือนความยุติธรรมเสีย

⁴ และบรรดาพวกผู้ใหญ่ของอิสราเอลก็พากันมาหาซามูเอลที่เมืองรามาห์

⁵ และเรียนท่านว่า "ดูเถิด ท่านชราแล้ว และบุตรชายของท่านมิได้ดำเนินในทางของท่าน บัดนี้ขอท่านได้กำหนดตั้งกษัตริย์ให้วินิจฉัยพวกเราอย่างประชาชาติทั้งหลายเถิด"

⁶ แต่เมื่อเขาพูดว่า "ขอตั้งกษัตริย์ให้วินิจฉัยเราทั้งหลาย" ก็กระทำให้ซามูเอลไม่พอใจ และซามูเอลได้ทูลอธิษฐานต่อพระเยโฮวาห์

⁷ และพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงตอบซามูเอลว่า "จงฟังเสียงประชาชนในเรื่องทั้งสิ้นที่เขาทั้งหลายขอต่อเจ้า เพราะว่าเขามิได้ละทิ้งเจ้า แต่เขาทั้งหลายได้ละทิ้งเรา ไม่ให้เราครอบครองเหนือเขา

⁸ ตามการกระทำทั้งสิ้นซึ่งเขาได้กระทำตั้งแต่วันที่เรานำเขาออกมาจากอียิปต์จนถึงวันนี้ คือเขาได้ละทิ้งเราและปรนนิบัติพระอื่น เขาจึงกระทำเช่นเดียวกันต่อเจ้าด้วย

⁹ เหตุฉะนั้นบัดนี้จงฟังเสียงของเขา ขอแต่จงคอยทักท้วงเขา และสำแดงให้ทราบถึงวิธีการของกษัตริย์ผู้ที่จะครอบครองเขาทั้งหลาย"

¹⁰ ซามูเอลจึงเอาพระดำรัสทั้งสิ้นของพระเยโฮวาห์มาบอกกล่าวแก่ประชาชนผู้ร้องขอให้ท่านตั้งกษัตริย์

¹¹ ท่านกล่าวว่า "นี่เป็นวิธีการของกษัตริย์ผู้ที่จะครอบครองเหนือเจ้า กษัตริย์จะเกณฑ์บุตรชายทั้งหลายของเจ้าและกำหนดให้ประจำรถรบ และให้เป็นพลม้า และให้วิ่งหน้ารถรบของพระองค์

¹² แล้วพระองค์จะตั้งเขาให้เป็นนายพัน นายห้าสิบของพระองค์ ให้บางคนไถที่ดินของพระองค์และเกี่ยวข้าว และทำศัสตราวุธ และเครื่องใช้ของรถรบ

¹³ พระองค์จะนำบุตรสาวของเจ้าไปเป็นผู้ปรุงเครื่องหอม ทำครัวและปิ้งขนม

¹⁴ พระองค์จะเอานา สวนองุ่นและสวนมะกอกเทศที่ดีที่สุดของเจ้าให้แก่ข้าราชการของพระองค์

¹⁵ พระองค์จะชักหนึ่งในสิบของพืชผลและผลองุ่นของท่านให้แก่มหาดเล็กและข้าราชการของพระองค์

¹⁶ พระองค์จะเอาคนใช้ผู้ชายและคนใช้ผู้หญิง และคนหนุ่มๆที่ดีที่สุดของท่าน และลาของท่านให้ไปทำงานของพระองค์

¹⁷ พระองค์จะชักหนึ่งในสิบของฝูงสัตว์ของท่าน และท่านทั้งหลายจะเป็นทาสของพระองค์

¹⁸ ในวันนั้นท่านจะร้องทุกข์เพราะกษัตริย์ของท่าน ผู้ซึ่งท่านทั้งหลายได้เลือกนั้น แต่พระเยโฮวาห์จะไม่สดับท่านในวันนั้น"

¹⁹ แต่ประชาชนปฏิเสธไม่เชื่อฟังเสียงของซามูเอล เขาทั้งหลายกล่าวว่า "เราไม่ยอม แต่เราจะต้องมีกษัตริย์ปกครองเรา

²⁰ เพื่อเราจะเป็นเหมือนประชาชาติทั้งหลายด้วย และเพื่อกษัตริย์ของเราจะวินิจฉัยเรา และนำหน้าเราไปและรบศึกให้เรา"

²¹ และเมื่อซามูเอลได้ยินถ้อยคำทั้งสิ้นของประชาชน ท่านก็นำไปทูลพระเยโฮวาห์ให้ทรงทราบ

²² และพระเยโฮวาห์ตรัสกับซามูเอลว่า "จงฟังเสียงของเขาทั้งหลายเถิด และจงตั้งกษัตริย์องค์หนึ่งให้เขา" แล้วซามูเอลจึงกล่าวแก่คนอิสราเอลว่า "ให้ทุกคนกลับไปยังเมืองของตน"

¹ Abram went up out of Egypt: he, his wife, all that he had, and Lot with him, into the South.

² Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.

³ He went on his journeys from the South even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,

⁴ to the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first. There Abram called on the name of Yahweh.

⁵ Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

⁶ The land was not able to bear them, that they might live together: for their substance was great, so that they could not live together.

⁷ There was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite lived in the land at that time.

⁸ Abram said to Lot, "Please, let there be no strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are relatives.

⁹ Isn't the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me. If you go to the left hand, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I will go to the left."

¹⁰ Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere, before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of Yahweh, like the land of Egypt, as you go to Zoar.

¹¹ So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself. Lot traveled east, and they separated themselves the one from the other.

¹² Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom.

¹³ Now the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners against Yahweh.

¹⁴ Yahweh said to Abram, after Lot was separated from him, "Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,

¹⁵ for all the land which you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring forever.

¹⁶ I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then your seed may also be numbered.

¹⁷ Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its breadth; for I will give it to you."

¹⁸ Abram moved his tent, and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to Yahweh.
