¹ And all the earth was of one lip^*, and their words one.

² And it was when they journeyed from the east, that they found a vale in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.

³ And they said, a man^◦ to^▵ his companion, Come^▵, let us make bricks^*, and let us fire them for a firing^*. And they had^◦ brick for stone, and they had^◦ tar` for clay.

⁴ And they said, Come^▵, let us build for ourselves a city and a tower, and its head in the heavens; and let us make for ourselves a name, lest perhaps^* we be scattered on the faces of all the earth.

⁵ And Jehovah came·​·down to see the city and the tower which the sons of man were building.

⁶ And Jehovah said, Behold, the people are one, and all of them have^◦ one lip, and this is what they begin to do; and now there will not be held·​·back from them^◦ anything^◦ which they scheme to do.

⁷ Come^▵, let us go·​·down, and there confuse their lip, that they hear not, a man^◦ the lip of his companion.

⁸ And Jehovah scattered them from thence on the faces of all the earth; and they stopped building the city.

⁹ Therefore He called the name of it Babel, for there did Jehovah confuse^* the lip of all the earth; and from thence did Jehovah scatter them on the faces of all the earth.

¹⁰ These are the births of Shem: Shem was a son of a hundred years, and begot Arpachshad, two·​·years after the flood.

¹¹ And Shem lived after he begot Arpachshad five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

¹² And Arpachshad lived five and thirty years, and begot Shelach.

¹³ And Arpachshad lived after he begot Shelach three years and four hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

¹⁴ And Shelach lived thirty years, and begot Eber.

¹⁵ And Shelach lived after he begot Eber three years and four hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

¹⁶ And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begot Peleg.

¹⁷ And Eber lived after he begot Peleg thirty years and four hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

¹⁸ And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.

¹⁹ And Peleg lived after he begot Reu nine years and two·​·hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

²⁰ And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begot Serug.

²¹ And Reu lived after he begot Serug seven years and two·​·hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

²² And Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.

²³ And Serug lived after he begot Nahor two·​·hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

²⁴ And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begot Terah.

²⁵ And Nahor lived after he begot Terah nineteen years and a hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

²⁶ And Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

²⁷ And these are the births of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.

²⁸ And Haran died upon the faces of Terah, his father^*, in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took to themselves wives; the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

³⁰ And Sarai was barren; she had^◦ no child.

³¹ And Terah took Abram his son; and Lot the son of Haran, the son of his son; and Sarai his daughter-in-law, the wife of Abram his son; and they went·​·out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go^◦ to the land of Canaan; and they came even to^◦ Haran, and dwelt there.

³² And the days of Terah were five years and two·​·hundred years; and Terah died in Haran.

¹ And it was, when King Hezekiah^◦ heard it, that he rent his garments, and covered himself with sackcloth, and came·​·into the house of Jehovah.

² And he sent Eliakim, who was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, unto^▵ Isaiah^◦ the prophet, the son of Amoz.

³ And they said to^▵ him, Thus says Hezekiah^◦, A day of adversity, and of reproving and of disdain is this day; for the sons have come even·​·to the breaking forth^*, and there is no power to give·​·birth.

⁴ Perhaps Jehovah thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom his lord the king of Assyria has sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which Jehovah thy God has heard; and thou shalt lift·​·up a prayer for^▫ those·​·left who are found.

⁵ And the servants of King Hezekiah^◦ came to^▵ Isaiah^◦.

⁶ And Isaiah^◦ said to them, Thus shall you say to^▵ your lord, Thus says Jehovah, Fear not on·​·account·​·of^◦ the words which thou hast heard, with which the lads of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.

⁷ Behold, I am putting^◦ a spirit into him, and he shall hear a report and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

⁸ And Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah; for he had heard that he had journeyed from Lachish.

⁹ And he heard concerning^▵ Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, saying, Behold, he is come·​·out to fight with^◦ thee. And he turned·​·back and sent messengers to^▵ Hezekiah^◦, saying,

¹⁰ Thus shall you say to^▵ Hezekiah^◦ king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou^◦ trustest, beguile thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

¹¹ Behold, thou^◦ hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by dooming them; and shalt thou^◦ be rescued?

¹² Have the gods of the nations rescued those whom my fathers destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the sons of Eden who were in Telassar?

¹³ Where^◦ is the king of Ḥamath, and the king of Arpadh, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena and Iwwah?

¹⁴ And Hezekiah^◦ took the letters from the hand of the messengers and read them; and he went·​·up·​·to the house of Jehovah; and Hezekiah^◦ spread it before Jehovah.

¹⁵ And Hezekiah^◦ prayed before Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, Who sittest on the cherubim, Thou^◦ art God, Thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; Thou^◦ hast made the heavens and the earth.

¹⁶ Incline, O Jehovah, Thine ear, and hear; open^◦, O Jehovah, Thine eyes, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, with which he has sent him to reproach the living God.

¹⁷ Truly, Jehovah, the kings of Assyria have wasted the nations and their land.

¹⁸ And they have given their gods into the fire; for they^◦ were not gods, but^◦ the work^◦ of the hands of man, wood and stone; and they made them perish.

¹⁹ And now, O Jehovah our God, save us, I pray^◦, out·​·of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may·​·know that Thou^◦ alone art Jehovah God.

²⁰ And Isaiah^◦ the son of Amoz sent to^▵ Hezekiah^◦, saying, Thus says Jehovah the God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to^▵ Me against^▵ Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard.

²¹ This is the word that Jehovah has spoken concerning him; The virgin daughter of Zion has despised thee, has derided thee; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken^◦ the head after thee.

²² Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? And against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted·​·up thine eyes on·​·high? against the Holy·​·One of Israel.

²³ By the hand of thy messengers hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots will I^◦ ascend the heights of the mountains the flanks of Lebanon; and I will cut·​·off the height^◦ of its cedars, and its choicest fir·​·trees; and I will come·​·into the lodging·​·place on his edge, the forest of his cultivated·​·field^*.

²⁴ I^◦ have dug a spring and I have drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my footsteps I have dried·​·up^◦ all the rivers^◦ of Egypt.

²⁵ Hast thou not heard, from far·​·off, that I have done it and, from the ancient days, that I have formed it? Now I have brought it to pass, and it shall be for laying·​·waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.

²⁶ And their dwellers, short^◦ of hand^*, were·​·dismayed and ashamed; they became as the herb of the field, and the vegetable of the tender·​·herb, the grass of the roofs, and the field scorched^◦ before the standing·​·grain.

²⁷ But thy dwelling, and thy going·​·out and thy coming·​·in, I know, and thy trembling toward^▵ Me.

²⁸ Because of thy contention^▵ toward^▵ Me, and thine ease has come·​·up into My ears, therefore will I set My hook in thy nose, and My bit in thy lips, and I will cause thee to return by the way by which thou camest.

²⁹ And this shall be the sign to thee: you shall eat this year, that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which grows·​·further; and in the third year sow ye and harvest, and plant vineyards and eat the fruit thereof.

³⁰ And those delivered who are left of the house of Judah, shall again take root downward, and make fruit upward.

³¹ For from Jerusalem shall go·​·forth those who·​·are·​·left, and they shall escape^◦ from Mount Zion; the zeal of Jehovah of Armies shall do this.

³² Therefore thus says Jehovah concerning^▵ the king of Assyria, He shall not come to^▵ this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor shall he go·​·before her with a shield, nor spill·​·out an embankment against her;

³³ by the way that he came, by it shall he return, and unto^▵ this city shall he not come, says^◦ Jehovah.

³⁴ For I will defend this city to save it, for My own sake^◦, and for the sake^◦ of David My servant.

³⁵ And it was, in that^◦ night, that the angel of Jehovah went·​·forth and smote in the camp of Assyria, a hundred eighty and five thousand; and they got·​·up·​·early in the morning, and, behold, all of them dead corpses.

³⁶ And Sennacherib king of Assyria journeyed, and went and returned, and dwelt in Nineveh.

³⁷ And it was, that he^◦ was bowing·​·down in the house of Nisroch his god, and Adrammelech and Sharezer smote him with the sword; and they^◦ escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esar-ḥaddon his son reigned in· his ·stead.
