1
And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah◦ had done, and all about how▫ he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

And Jezebel sent a messenger unto▵ Elijah◦, saying, Thus do the gods to me, and thus more again, unless by this time tomorrow, I put thy soul as the soul of one of them◦.

And he saw it, and he arose and went for◦ his life*, and came to Beer-sheba which is of Judah, and let· his lad ·stay there.

But he◦ himself went◦ into the wilderness the journey* of a day, and came and sat under a* juniper, and asked for his soul to die, and said, It is too much; now, O Jehovah, take my soul; for I▵ am not better than my fathers.

And he lay··down and slept under a juniper; and behold*, an angel touched him, and said to him, Arise, eat.

And he looked, and, behold, by his headrest a cake◦ on embers, and a flask of water. And he did eat and drink, and turned··back and laid··down.

And the angel of Jehovah returned the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise, eat, for the way is too much for thee.
8
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the power of that◦ food forty days, and forty nights, even··to the mount of God, Horeb*.

And he came thither unto▵ the cave, and passed··the··night there; and, behold, the word of Jehovah was to▵ him, and He said to him, What is there for thee here, Elijah◦?

And he said, With zeal have I been··zealous for Jehovah the God of Armies; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, broken··down Thine altars, and killed Thy prophets with the sword; and I remain, I◦ alone; and they seek my soul to take it.

And He said, Go··out and stand on◦ the mountain before Jehovah. And behold, Jehovah passing by, and a great and strong wind pulling··apart◦ the mountain, and breaking the rocks◦ before Jehovah; Jehovah was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; Jehovah was not in the earthquake;

and after the earthquake a fire; Jehovah was not in the fire; and after the fire a thin voice of stillness.

And it was, when Elijah◦ heard, that he wrapped his face in his mantle◦, and went··out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And, behold there was a voice to▵ him, and it said, What is there for thee here, Elijah◦?

And he said, With zeal have I been··zealous for Jehovah, God of Armies, for the sons of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, broken··down Thine altars, and killed Thy prophets with the sword, and I remain, I◦ alone; and they seek my soul to take it.

And Jehovah said to▵ him, Go, return to thy way toward the wilderness of Damascus; and thou shalt come and anoint Hazael for a king over Syria;
16
and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint for a king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah, shalt thou anoint for a prophet in· thy ·stead.

And it shall be, that him that escapes from the sword of Hazael, shall· Jehu ·put··to··death; and him that escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put··to··death.

And I have left in Israel seven thousand, all the knees which have not stooped to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.

And he went thence and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, and he◦ was plowing, with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he◦ with the twelfth; and Elijah◦ crossed··over to▵ him, and cast his mantle◦ to▵ him.

And he forsook the cattle and ran after Elijah◦, and said, Let me, I pray◦, kiss my father and my mother, and I will go after thee. And he said to him, Go, return; for what have I done for thee?

And he returned from after him, and took the pair of cattle and sacrificed them, and with the instruments of the cattle he cooked their flesh, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. And he arose and went after Elijah◦, and ministered unto him.
