Daniel 8

Studie

   

1 I kong Belsasars tredje regjeringsår fikk jeg, Daniel, se et syn, et som kom efter det jeg før hadde sett.

2 Da jeg hadde dette syn, forekom det mig som jeg var i borgen Susan i landskapet Elam, og videre forekom det mig i synet som jeg var ved elven Ulai.

3 Og da jeg så op, fikk jeg se en vær som stod foran elven; den hadde to horn, og begge hornene var høie, men det ene høiere enn det andre, og det høieste vokste sist frem.

4 Jeg så væren stange mot vest og mot nord og mot syd, og intet dyr kunde stå sig for den, og det var ingen som kunde frelse av dens vold; den gjorde som den vilde, og tedde sig overmodig.

5 Og da jeg videre gav akt, fikk jeg se en gjetebukk som kom fra vest og fór frem over hele jorden uten å røre ved jorden, og bukken hadde et veldig horn mellem øinene.

6 Og den kom like bort til væren med de to horn, den som jeg så foran elven, og sprang imot den i sin voldsomme kraft.

7 Og jeg så hvorledes den kom tett inn på væren og i sinne fór løs på den og støtte til den og sønderbrøt begge dens horn, og væren hadde ikke kraft til å stå sig for den; og den kastet den til jorden og trådte den ned, og det var ingen som kunde frelse væren av dens vold.

8 Og gjetebukken blev overmåte mektig; men just som den hadde nådd sin fulle styrke, blev det store horn brutt av, og i stedet for det vokste det op fire veldige horn, som vendte mot himmelens fire hjørner.

9 Og av det ene av dem skjøt det op et nytt horn, som fra først av var lite, men siden blev overmåte stort mot syd og mot øst og mot det fagre land*. / {* d.e. Israels land; DNL 11, 16. 41. JE 3, 19.}

10 Og det vokste like op til himmelens hær og kastet nogen av hæren - av stjernene* - til jorden og trådte dem ned. / {* d.e. av Guds folk; DNL 8, 24.}

11 Ja, like til hærens fyrste hevet det sig; det tok fra ham det stadige offer, og hans helligdoms bolig blev omstyrtet.

12 Og sammen med det stadige offer blev hæren overgitt til ødeleggelse for frafallets skyld; og hornet kastet sannheten til jorden, og det hadde fremgang med alt det foretok sig.

13 Så hørte jeg en av de hellige tale; og en annen hellig sa til ham som talte: For hvor lang tid gjelder synet om det stadige offer og det ødeleggende frafall - at både helligdom og hær overgis til nedtredelse?

14 Og han sa til mig: To tusen og tre hundre aftener og morgener; så skal helligdommen komme til sin rett igjen.

15 Da nu jeg, Daniel, så dette syn, søkte jeg å forstå det; da stod det med én gang foran mig en skikkelse som så ut som en mann.

16 Og jeg hørte et menneskes røst mellem Ulais bredder; han ropte: Gabriel! Forklar synet for ham!

17 kom han dit jeg stod, og da han kom, blev jeg forferdet og falt på mitt ansikt; og han sa til mig: Gi akt på mine ord, menneskebarn! For synet sikter til endens tid.

18 Mens han talte med mig, sank jeg sanseløs på mitt ansikt til jorden; da rørte han ved mig og reiste mig op igjen.

19 Og han sa: Nu vil jeg kunngjøre dig hvad som skal skje i vredens siste tid; for synet sikter til den for enden fastsatte tid.

20 Væren du så, den med de to horn, det er kongene av Media og Persia.

21 Og den raggete bukk er kongen av Grekenland, og det store horn mellem dens øine er den første konge*. / {* Aleksander den store.}

22 Og at dette horn blev avbrutt, og at det kom fire andre i dets sted, det betyr at fire kongeriker* skal opstå av hans folk, men ikke med hans kraft. / {* d.e. det makedoniske, trakiske, syriske og egyptiske.}

23 Og i den siste tid av deres herredømme, når overtrederne har gjort sine synders mål fullt, skal det opstå en konge med frekt åsyn og kyndig i onde råd*. / {* Antiokus Epifanes.}

24 Og hans makt skal bli stor, men ikke ved hans egen kraft, og han skal gjøre utrolig stor skade og ha fremgang med alt det han foretar sig; han skal ødelegge mektige fyrster og de helliges folk.

25 Og fordi han er klok, skal hans svikefulle ferd lykkes for ham; han skal ophøie sig i sitt hjerte, og han skal ødelegge mange i deres trygghet; ja, mot fyrstenes fyrste skal han sette sig op; men uten menneskehånd skal han knuses.

26 Og synet om aftenene og morgenene, som det var tale om, er sannhet; men gjem du synet, for det sikter til en fjern fremtid!

27 Men jeg, Daniel, blev rent avmektig, og jeg blev syk en tid; så stod jeg op og gjorde min tjeneste hos kongen; jeg var forferdet over synet, men det var ingen som forstod det.

10455. 'And he said to Moses, There is the noise of war in the camp' means an assault on the truth and good which are heaven and the Church's by falsities and evils which come from hell. This is clear from the meaning of 'the noise' as thought and affection, which are the inner components of the noise, and so the essential nature of the interiors, dealt with above in 10454; from the meaning of 'war' as truth which springs from good fighting with falsity that arises from evil, and in the contrary sense as falsity which arises from evil fighting against truth that springs from good, dealt with below; and from the meaning of 'the camp' as the Church and heaven, for they are what the camp of the Israelites represented, see 10038. From these meanings it is evident that 'the noise of war in the camp' means an assault on truth and good which are the Church and heaven's by falsities and evils which come from hell. They are said to come from hell because all falsities and evils originate there, and because at this point in the narrative 'the camp', when the golden calf was worshipped in it, means hell, see below in 10458.

[2] The reason why these things are meant by 'the noise of war in the camp' is that the subject at present in the internal sense is the interiors of the Israelite nation. Their interiors were contrary to the truths and forms of good of the Church and of heaven, so completely contrary that they cast them away. For self-love and love of the world had taken possession of the interiors of that nation, and where those loves reign the Church's truths and forms of good are subject to constant attack, no matter how holy the outward acts of worship seem to be. The holiness in those people's worship is a means to an end, and eminence and wealth are their ends in view, so that the things of heaven and the Church are means, and those of the world and self are ends. The end which a person has in view is the master, while the means is the servant. From this it follows that with people like this heaven is the servant and the world is the master, and consequently that the world occupies the highest position, thus that of the head, while heaven occupies a lower position, thus that of the feet. If therefore heaven does not pander to those loves it is cast underfoot, trampled on, and trodden into the ground. Such an inversion exists with those with whom self-love and love of the world reign, which also explains why such people when looked at by angels appear inverted, head downwards and feet upwards.

[3] The reason why 'war' means truth fighting with falsity, and in the contrary sense falsity fighting against truth, is that 'war' in the spiritual sense is nothing other. Such conflicts are also meant in the internal sense by 'wars' in the historical narratives of the Word, as well as by 'wars' in the prophetical parts, as becomes clear from the places quoted from the Word in 1664, 8273. Anyone who does not know that in the Word wars in a spiritual sense are meant by 'wars' cannot know the implications contained in the details regarding the wars mentioned in Daniel, Chapters 7, 8, 11, also those mentioned in places throughout the Book of Revelation, and those in the Gospels where the final times of the Church are the subject, Matthew 24:5-7; Mark 13:7-8, and in other places. So it is also that all weapons of war - swords, spears, shields, bows, arrows, and more - mean the implements of spiritual conflict; these have been dealt with in the explanations in various places.

8273. 'Jehovah is a man of war' means that the Lord provides protection against all evils and falsities, which come from the hells. This is clear from the meaning of 'a man of war' as one who fights against falsities and evils, that is, against the hells, and overcomes them, at this point one who provides a person protection against them. For as shown already, the Lord alone fights on behalf of a person and protects him when he is under attack from the hells; He does so constantly, especially in temptations, which are spiritual conflicts. The Lord is called 'a man of war', primarily because when He was in the world He fought alone, that is, all by Himself, against the hells, which at that time were for the most part open. They were attacking and attempting to bring under their control all without exception who were entering the next life. The reason why the devil's crew, that is, the hells, were prowling around in that way then was that the Divine passing through heaven, which was the Divine Human before the Lord's Coming, was not powerful enough to oppose the evils and falsities which had increased so enormously. Therefore the Divine was pleased to take upon Himself a Human Form and make it Divine. At the same time - through the conflicts to which He allowed Himself to be subjected - He cast the devil's crew into the hells, shut them in there, and made them subject to the heavens; also at the same time He restored the heavens themselves to order. These conflicts are the primary reason for calling the Lord 'a man of war'. And after them, when He had thereby conquered the hells and made Himself righteousness, He has been called such because with Divine power He provides people protection, doing so constantly, and especially in the conflicts brought by temptations.

[2] The truth that the Lord alone, all by Himself, fought against the hells and overcame them is presented in the following way in Isaiah,

Judgement is cast away backwards, and justice stands afar off, for truth has stumbled in the street, and uprightness cannot come in; while truth has been removed, and he who retreats from evil is insane. Jehovah saw, and it was evil in His eyes that there was no judgement. And He saw that there was no man (vir), and wondered that there was no intercessor therefore His own arm brought salvation to Him, and His righteousness lifted Him up. Consequently He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon His head. Isaiah 59:14-17.

This describes conditions at that time in both worlds and declares that the Lord all by Himself, alone, re-established things that were in a state of collapse. The like is stated elsewhere in the same prophet,

Who is this who comes from Edom, with spattered clothes from Bozra, He that is glorious in His apparel, marching in the vast numbers of His strength? I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save. I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples not a man (vir) was with Me. Consequently their victory 1 has been sprinkled on My clothes. For the day of vengeance was in My heart, and the year of My redeemed had come. I had looked around, but there was no helper, and I wondered, but there was no one to uphold; therefore My own arm brought salvation to Me. Isaiah 63:1-5.

These quotations make it clear that when in the world, the Lord fought alone against the hells and overcame them.

[3] So far as conflicts with and victories over the hells are concerned, the truth is that anyone who overcomes them once does so for evermore; for through victory he gains power over them, since in the same measure he consolidates within himself, and makes his own, the good of love and the truth of faith against which the hells afterwards do not dare to attempt anything. When He was in the world the Lord allowed Himself to endure conflicts brought by temptations from all the hells, and through those conflicts He made Divine the Human within Him and at the same time reduced the hells to a state of obedience for evermore, see 1663, 1668, 1690, 1692, 1737, 1813, 1820, 2776, 2786, 2795, 2803, 2814, 2816, 4287. So it is that the Lord alone has power over the hells for ever, and with Divine power fights on behalf of a person. This now explains why the Lord is called 'a man of war' and also 'a mighty man', as again in Isaiah,

Jehovah will go forth as a mighty man, as a man of wars He will arouse zeal; He will prevail over His enemies. Isaiah 42:13.

And in David,

Who is this King of glory? Jehovah strong and a mighty man, Jehovah a mighty man of war. Who is this King of glory? Jehovah Zebaoth (Jehovah of Hosts or Armies). Psalms 24:8, 10.

[4] Wherever 'war' is mentioned in the Word, spiritual war against falsities and evils - or what amounts to the same thing, against the devil, that is, the hells - is meant in the internal sense, 1664, 2686. The wars or battles which the Lord fought against the hells are the subject in the internal sense both in the historical sections of the Word and in its prophetical parts; and no less the subject are the Lord's wars or battles fought on behalf of man. With the Ancients, with whom the Lord's Church existed, there also existed a Word, having both a historical section and a prophetical part, which is not extant at the present day. Its historical section was called The Book of the Wars of Jehovah and its prophetical part The Utterances. That Word is referred to in Moses, Numbers 21:14, 27. The fact that the expression used in Numbers 21:27 means prophetical utterances is evident from the meaning the expression is given at Numbers 23:7, 18; 24:3, 15. The Wars of Jehovah in that Word meant the Lord's battles against and His victories over the hells when He was in the world. They also meant the battles fought after that, and the everlasting victories won by Him, on behalf of man, the Church, and His kingdom. The hells desire constantly to puff themselves up, for they yearn only to dominate; but they are kept in check by the Lord alone. Their attempts to exert themselves are seen as bubbles boiling up or as a person arching his back. But every time they attempt such a thing a large number of them are cast further down.
