Daniel 5

Studie

   

1 Kong Belsasar gjorde et stort gjestebud for sine tusen stormenn, og han drakk vin for deres øine.

2 Da vinen smakte Belsasar, bød han at de gull- og sølvkar som hans far Nebukadnesar hadde tatt bort fra templet i Jerusalem, skulde hentes, så kongen og hans stormenn, hans hustruer og hans medhustruer kunde drikke av dem.

3 Så hentet de de gullkar som var tatt bort fra templet, fra Guds hus i Jerusalem; og kongen og hans stormenn, hans hustruer og hans medhustruer drakk av dem.

4 De drakk vin og priste sine guder av gull og sølv, av kobber, jern, tre og sten.

5 I samme stund kom det til syne fingrer av en menneskehånd, som skrev på den kalkede vegg i kongens palass, midt imot lysestaken. Og kongen så den hånd som skrev.

6 Da skiftet kongen farve, og hans tanker forferdet ham; hans lenders ledemot slappedes, og hans knær slo mot hverandre.

7 Og kongen ropte med høi røst at de skulde hente åndemanerne, kaldeerne og sannsigerne. Så tok han da til orde og sa til Babels vismenn: Den mann som leser denne skrift og kunngjør mig dens uttydning, han skal klæs i purpur og få en gullkjede om sin hals, og i makt skal han være den tredje i riket.

8 Da alle kongens vismenn var kommet til stede, var de ikke i stand til å lese skriften og kunngjøre kongen dens uttydning.

9 Da blev kong Belsasar storlig forferdet og skiftet farve, og hans stormenn blev aldeles forvirret.

10 Ved kongens og hans stormenns ord kom dronningen* inn i gjestebudssalen. Hun tok til orde og sa: Kongen leve evindelig! La ikke dine tanker forferde dig, og skift ikke farve! / {* d.e. enkedronningen. DNL 2, 4.}

11 Det finnes i ditt rike en mann i hvem de hellige guders ånd er, og hos hvem det i din fars dager blev funnet oplysning og klokskap og en visdom som guders visdom; og kong Nebukadnesar, din far, gjorde ham til mester for tegnsutleggerne, åndemanerne, kaldeerne og sannsigerne. Således, konge, ophøiet din far ham,

12 fordi det hos ham fantes en høi ånd og kunnskap og innsikt og evne til å tyde drømmer og løse gåter og utrede vanskelige spørsmål - jeg mener Daniel, han som kongen gav navnet Beltsasar. Send derfor bud efter Daniel! Så kunngjør han dig uttydningen.

13 Så blev Daniel ført inn for kongen. Og kongen tok til orde og sa til Daniel: Er du Daniel, en av de jødiske fanger som kongen, min far, førte hit fra Juda?

14 Jeg har hørt om dig at guders ånd er i dig, og at det hos dig er funnet oplysning og innsikt og høi visdom.

15 Nu er vismennene og åndemanerne blitt ført inn for mig for å lese denne skrift og kunngjøre mig dens uttydning; men de er ikke i stand til å kunngjøre mig nogen uttydning av den.

16 Men jeg har hørt om dig at du kan gi uttydninger og utrede vanskelige spørsmål; kan du nu lese denne skrift og kunngjøre mig dens uttydning, så skal du klæs i purpur og få en gullkjede om din hals, og i makt skal du være den tredje i riket.

17 Da svarte Daniel og sa der han stod foran kongen: Dine gaver kan du selv ha, og dine foræringer kan du gi til en annen! Men skriften skal jeg lese for kongen og kunngjøre ham dens uttydning.

18 Konge! Den høieste Gud gav Nebukadnesar, din far, riket og makten og æren og herligheten;

19 og for den makts skyld han hadde gitt ham, bevet og fryktet alle folk, ætter og tungemål for ham; hvem han vilde, slo han ihjel, og hvem han vilde, lot han leve, og hvem han vilde, ophøiet han, og hvem han vilde, fornedret han.

20 Men da hans hjerte ophøiet sig, og hans ånd blev stolt og overmodig, blev han nedstøtt fra sin kongetrone, og hans ære blev tatt fra ham.

21 Han blev utstøtt fra menneskenes barn, og hans hjerte blev likt dyrenes, og hos villeslene var hans bolig; urter måtte han ete likesom oksene, og av himmelens dugg blev hans legeme vætet, inntil han sannet at den høieste Gud råder over kongedømmet blandt menneskene og setter den han vil, til å styre.

22 Men du Belsasar, hans sønn, har ikke ydmyket ditt hjerte, enda du visste alt dette;

23 du har ophøiet dig mot himmelens herre, og du har latt hente karene som var tatt fra hans hus, og du og dine stormenn, dine hustruer og dine medhustruer har drukket vin av dem, og du har prist dine guder av sølv og gull, av kobber, jern, tre og sten, som ikke ser og ikke hører og ikke har forstand; men den Gud i hvis hånd din livsånde er, og som råder over alle dine veier, har du ikke æret.

24 Derfor blev nu denne hånd sendt fra ham, og denne skrift skrevet.

25 Og dette er den skrift som er skrevet her: Mene, mene, tekel, ufarsin*. / {* d.e. tellet, tellet, veid, og de deler.}

26 Og så er uttydningen av dette ord: Mene: Tellet har Gud ditt kongedømmes dager og gjort ende på det.

27 Tekel: Veid er du på vektskål og funnet for lett.

28 Peres: Delt er ditt kongedømme og gitt til mederne og perserne.

29 Da bød Belsasar at Daniel skulde klæs i purpur og en gullkjede legges om hans hals, og at det skulde utropes om ham at han i makt skulde være den tredje i riket.

30 Samme natt blev kaldeerkongen Belsasar drept.

8932. 'You shall not make [to be] with Me gods of silver and gods of gold' means that they are to avoid completely things which to outward appearances look like truths and forms of good but inwardly are falsities and evils. This is clear from the meaning of 'making gods' as worshipping, since someone who makes gods for himself does so in order to worship them; from the meaning of 'silver' as truth, and therefore in the contrary sense as falsity, and from the meaning of 'gold' as good, and therefore in the contrary sense as evil, both dealt with in 113, 1551, 1552, 2954, 5658, 6914, 6917, 7999. The reason why these are things which to outward appearances look like truths and forms of good, but inwardly are falsities and evils, is that the words 'making them with Me', that is, with Jehovah God, are used. Actual Divine Truth and Goodness reside on an inner level; they reside on an outer level as well, but then they are embodied in types or representative images. For the outward things composing a type or image stand for and represent inner realities. Outward things are falsities and evils when, separated from inner realities, they are held to be holy and are worshipped; and yet they still look like truths and forms of good because they represent those realities. These things are meant by 'making [to be] with Jehovah God gods of silver and gods of gold'.

[2] This commandment follows immediately after the Ten Commandments because the Israelite and Jewish people were the sort that held outward things separated from inward realities to be holy and worshipped them as being altogether Divine, 3479, 3769, 4281, 4293, 4307, 4314, 4316, 4433, 4680, 4825, 4832, 4844, 4847, 4865, 4903, 6304, 6832, 8814, 8819. To gain more definite knowledge of what those things are which look to outward appearances like truths and forms of good but inwardly are falsities and evils, and what those things are like, take as examples all the ritual practices of the Jewish Church, such as sacrifices, burning incense, washings, and many other practices. Outwardly they were truths and forms of good, not in themselves but because they were types or images that stood for and represented inward truths and forms of good, which are aspects of love to the Lord and faith in Him. When the outward objects belonging to such practices were held to be holy, and especially when they were worshipped, as they were by the Jews and Israelites when they became idolaters and used them in the worship of strange gods, they no longer had any connection with the truths and forms of good which they stood for and represented, because inwardly they were falsities and evils.

[3] The situation was the same with all other things that were types or representative images of heavenly and Divine realities among that people. For as soon as outward things which represented inner realities were used in the worship of other gods they became idols worshipped by them or 'gods of silver and gold which they made [to be] with Jehovah God'. For then those things looked to outward appearances like truths and forms of good, but inwardly they were falsities and evils.

[4] In general 'gods of silver and gold' are all the falsities and derivative evils in worship which are made to look like truth and good through wrong usages and misinterpretations of the Word, and at the same time through reasonings that are the product of self-intelligence. Such things are meant by 'gods of silver and gold' in the following places: In Isaiah,

On that day a person will cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold which they made for themselves to bow down to, to the moles and bats, to go into the clefts 1 of the rocks and into the fissures of the crags. Isaiah 2:20-21.

'Moles and bats' stands for those who are in darkness, that is, are steeped in falsities and derivative evils.

[5] In the same prophet,

On that day a man will cast aside his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your hands have made for you - a sin. Isaiah 31:7.

'Which your hands have made' stands for things which are the product of self-intelligence. In the same prophet,

The craftsman casts a graven image, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts silver chains for it. Isaiah 40:19.

'Graven images' are things which are products of the proprium or self, 8869. 'Overlaying with gold' stands for making things look to outward appearances like forms of good, 'casting silver chains' stands for making them seem to hang together as if linked to one another with truths, good being meant by 'gold' and truth by 'silver', see the paragraphs referred to above.

[6] Similarly in Jeremiah,

The customs 2 of the nations are vanity. Since indeed one cuts out wood from the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, he decorates it with silver and gold; they make it firm with pegs and hammers, so that it is not unsteady. Jeremiah 10:3-4.

In Hosea,

The Ephraimites sin more and more, and make for themselves a molten image from silver, idols by their own intelligence, completely the work of craftsmen. Hosea 13:2.

'Ephraim' stands for the Church's understanding, 5354, 6222, 6234, 6238, 6267; 'a molten image made from silver' stands for falsity that looks like truth, which is why it says 'by their own intelligence'; and 'completely the work of craftsmen' stands for the fact that it is all brought about through reasonings which are a product of the proprium or self.

[7] In Habakkuk,

Woe to him who says to a piece of wood, Awake! or to a dumb stone, Wake up, this will teach! Behold, this is bound in gold and silver, but there is no spirit in the midst of it. Habakkuk 2:19.

'A piece of wood' stands for evil, 'a stone' for falsity. 'Bound in gold and silver' stands for applications used to give the appearance of what is good and true. In Daniel,

Belshazzar said, when he had properly tasted the wine, that they were to bring the vessels of gold and silver which his father Nebuchadnezzar had brought from the temple that [had been] in Jerusalem, in order that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them. And they would drink wine, and praise the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. Daniel 5:2-4, 23.

'The vessels of gold and silver from the temple of Jerusalem' represented the forms of good and the truths which belonged to the Church and to the Lord's kingdom; 'drinking wine from them' meant desecrating them by means of evils and falsities, which are 'the gods of gold and silver'.

[8] In David,

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands They have a mouth, but they do not speak; they have eyes but do not see. Psalms 115:4-5; 135:15-16.

'Silver and gold, which are idols' stands for falsities and evils; 'the work of human hands' stands for the fact that they are the product of self-intelligence. In Moses,

You shall burn the graven images of the gods of the nations with fire; you shall not covet the silver and the gold that are on them, so that you take them to yourself; for it is an abomination to Jehovah your God. Therefore you shall not bring an abomination into your house, lest you become 3 an accursed thing like it; you shall utterly abhor it. Deuteronomy 7:25-26.

'Silver and gold on graven images' stands for falsities and evils which are worshipped as truths and forms of good because they have been made to look like these.

4281. 'The hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint as he wrestled with him' means that in the descendants of Jacob that conjunction had been thoroughly damaged and the two loves pulled apart. This becomes clear from the meaning of 'wrestling' in this sense as being pulled apart and so suffering damage. It is evident from what has been stated above in 4280 that 'the hollow of the thigh' means a joining together; and that 'Jacob' in the Word means not only Jacob but also all his descendants is clear from very many places, such as Numbers 23:7, 10, 21, 23; 24:5, 17, 19; Deuteronomy 33:10; Isaiah 40:27; 43:1, 22; 44:1-2, 21; 48:12; 59:20; Jeremiah 10:16, 25; 30:7, 10, 18; 31:7, 11; 46:27-28; Hosea 10:11; Amos 7:2; Micah 2:12; 3:8; Psalms 14:7; 24:6; 59:13; 78:5; 99:4; and in other places.

[2] Jacob and his descendants were by nature such that with them celestial and spiritual love could not be joined to natural good, that is, the internal or spiritual man could not be joined to the external or natural man. This is evident from the details told in the Word concerning that nation. For they neither knew nor wished to know what the internal or spiritual man was, and therefore that matter was not revealed to them. In fact it was their belief that nothing existed with man apart from the external and natural. Nor in all their worship did they have anything else in mind, so that Divine worship with them was wholly idolatrous; for once internal worship is separated from external, it is nothing but idolatrous. The Church which was established among them was not in fact a Church but only a representative of the Church, for which reason that Church is called a representative Church. For it was possible for a representative of the Church to exist among such people, see 1361, 3670, 4208.

[3] Indeed in representations no attention is paid to the person who represents, only to the thing represented by him. Consequently not only persons represented Divine, celestial, or spiritual things, but also inanimate objects, such as Aaron's garments, the ark, the altar, the oxen and sheep which used to be sacrificed, the lampstand with its lamps, the bread of the presence on the table of gold, the oil with which they were anointed, the frankincense, and other objects like these. This was why their kings, bad ones no less than the good, represented the Lord's kingship, and why their high priests, bad ones no less than the good, represented the things that belong to the Lord's Divine priesthood, when they performed their own function in external form according to the prescribed rules and commands. In order therefore that among them a representative of the Church might come into existence they were provided through plainly visible revelation with such prescribed rules and such laws as would be entirely representative. Therefore as long as they kept to them and strictly complied with them, those people were able to play a representative role. But when they deviated from them into the prescribed rules and laws of other nations, and in particular to the worship of another god, they deprived themselves of their ability to play that representative role. For this reason they were coerced by external means - which were captivities, calamities, threats, and miracles - into obeying laws and prescribed rules that were truly representative, not by internal means, as those people are whose external worship has internal within it. These are the considerations that are meant in the internal historical sense by the words 'the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint', which sense has regard to Jacob and his descendants.
