1 και επλημμελησαν οι υιοι ισραηλ πλημμελειαν μεγαλην και ενοσφισαντο απο του αναθεματος και ελαβεν αχαρ υιος χαρμι υιου ζαμβρι υιου ζαρα εκ της φυλης ιουδα απο του αναθεματος και εθυμωθη οργη κυριος τοις υιοις ισραηλ

2 και απεστειλεν ιησους ανδρας εις γαι η εστιν κατα βαιθηλ λεγων κατασκεψασθε την γαι και ανεβησαν οι ανδρες και κατεσκεψαντο την γαι

3 και ανεστρεψαν προς ιησουν και ειπαν προς αυτον μη αναβητω πας ο λαος αλλ' ως δισχιλιοι η τρισχιλιοι ανδρες αναβητωσαν και εκπολιορκησατωσαν την πολιν μη αναγαγης εκει τον λαον παντα ολιγοι γαρ εισιν

4 και ανεβησαν ωσει τρισχιλιοι ανδρες και εφυγον απο προσωπου των ανδρων γαι

5 και απεκτειναν απ' αυτων ανδρες γαι εις τριακοντα και εξ ανδρας και κατεδιωξαν αυτους απο της πυλης και συνετριψαν αυτους επι του καταφερους και επτοηθη η καρδια του λαου και εγενετο ωσπερ υδωρ

6 και διερρηξεν ιησους τα ιματια αυτου και επεσεν ιησους επι την γην επι προσωπον εναντιον κυριου εως εσπερας αυτος και οι πρεσβυτεροι ισραηλ και επεβαλοντο χουν επι τας κεφαλας αυτων

7 και ειπεν ιησους δεομαι κυριε ινα τι διεβιβασεν ο παις σου τον λαον τουτον τον ιορδανην παραδουναι αυτον τω αμορραιω απολεσαι ημας και ει κατεμειναμεν και κατωκισθημεν παρα τον ιορδανην

8 και τι ερω επει μετεβαλεν ισραηλ αυχενα απεναντι του εχθρου αυτου

9 και ακουσας ο χαναναιος και παντες οι κατοικουντες την γην περικυκλωσουσιν ημας και εκτριψουσιν ημας απο της γης και τι ποιησεις το ονομα σου το μεγα

10 και ειπεν κυριος προς ιησουν αναστηθι ινα τι τουτο συ πεπτωκας επι προσωπον σου

11 ημαρτηκεν ο λαος και παρεβη την διαθηκην ην διεθεμην προς αυτους και κλεψαντες απο του αναθεματος ενεβαλον εις τα σκευη αυτων

12 ου μη δυνωνται οι υιοι ισραηλ υποστηναι κατα προσωπον των εχθρων αυτων αυχενα επιστρεψουσιν εναντι των εχθρων αυτων οτι εγενηθησαν αναθεμα ου προσθησω ετι ειναι μεθ' υμων εαν μη εξαρητε το αναθεμα εξ υμων αυτων

13 αναστας αγιασον τον λαον και ειπον αγιασθηναι εις αυριον ταδε λεγει κυριος ο θεος ισραηλ το αναθεμα εν υμιν εστιν ου δυνησεσθε αντιστηναι απεναντι των εχθρων υμων εως αν εξαρητε το αναθεμα εξ υμων

14 και συναχθησεσθε παντες το πρωι κατα φυλας και εσται η φυλη ην αν δειξη κυριος προσαξετε κατα δημους και τον δημον ον εαν δειξη κυριος προσαξετε κατ' οικον και τον οικον ον εαν δειξη κυριος προσαξετε κατ' ανδρα

15 και ος αν ενδειχθη κατακαυθησεται εν πυρι και παντα οσα εστιν αυτω οτι παρεβη την διαθηκην κυριου και εποιησεν ανομημα εν ισραηλ

16 και ωρθρισεν ιησους και προσηγαγεν τον λαον κατα φυλας και ενεδειχθη η φυλη ιουδα

17 και προσηχθη κατα δημους και ενεδειχθη δημος ο ζαραι και προσηχθη κατα ανδρα

18 και ενεδειχθη αχαρ υιος ζαμβρι υιου ζαρα

19 και ειπεν ιησους τω αχαρ δος δοξαν σημερον τω κυριω θεω ισραηλ και δος την εξομολογησιν και αναγγειλον μοι τι εποιησας και μη κρυψης απ' εμου

20 και απεκριθη αχαρ τω ιησοι και ειπεν αληθως ημαρτον εναντιον κυριου θεου ισραηλ ουτως και ουτως εποιησα

21 ειδον εν τη προνομη ψιλην ποικιλην καλην και διακοσια διδραχμα αργυριου και γλωσσαν μιαν χρυσην πεντηκοντα διδραχμων και ενθυμηθεις αυτων ελαβον και ιδου αυτα εγκεκρυπται εν τη γη εν τη σκηνη μου και το αργυριον κεκρυπται υποκατω αυτων

22 και απεστειλεν ιησους αγγελους και εδραμον εις την σκηνην εις την παρεμβολην και ταυτα ην εγκεκρυμμενα εις την σκηνην και το αργυριον υποκατω αυτων

23 και εξηνεγκαν αυτα εκ της σκηνης και ηνεγκαν προς ιησουν και τους πρεσβυτερους ισραηλ και εθηκαν αυτα εναντι κυριου

24 και ελαβεν ιησους τον αχαρ υιον ζαρα και ανηγαγεν αυτον εις φαραγγα αχωρ και τους υιους αυτου και τας θυγατερας αυτου και τους μοσχους αυτου και τα υποζυγια αυτου και παντα τα προβατα αυτου και την σκηνην αυτου και παντα τα υπαρχοντα αυτου και πας ο λαος μετ' αυτου και ανηγαγεν αυτους εις εμεκαχωρ

25 και ειπεν ιησους τω αχαρ τι ωλεθρευσας ημας εξολεθρευσαι σε κυριος καθα και σημερον και ελιθοβολησαν αυτον λιθοις πας ισραηλ

26 και επεστησαν αυτω σωρον λιθων μεγαν και επαυσατο κυριος του θυμου της οργης δια τουτο επωνομασεν αυτο εμεκαχωρ εως της ημερας ταυτης

Exploring the Meaning of Joshua 7

Joshua 7: The defeat at Ai, and the sin of Achan.

This chapter opens with the statement that Israel had sinned at Jericho, because an Israelite named Achan had kept something for himself, against the Lord's commandment. (But Joshua doesn't know this yet.)

The great victory at Jericho was quickly followed by an embarrassing defeat at Ai. The Israelites hadn't expected much difficulty in taking Ai, and sent just a few thousand men to attack it. They were routed.

Spiritually, we might say that pride goes before a fall, but more specifically, in the work of our regeneration we are never to rest on our laurels, but to always stay alert to each situation and how we are internally handling it. (Apocalypse Revealed 158)

Understandably, Joshua pours out his heart to the Lord, wondering why they have even crossed over the Jordan to simply be destroyed. The Lord tells him that their defeat at Ai was because Israel sinned by taking some of the forbidden things of Jericho. The Lord explains how to put this right, by identifying the wrongdoer and destroying him and his family.

Note the weakness of Joshua (as earlier also with Moses at times) when things go wrong and he feels confused, full of doubt, hurt and afraid. When things go well, we go well; when things go badly, we tend to go to pieces. And we ask, “Why? Why this, why me, why now?”

The Lord’s answer is a command, “Get up! Why are you lying on your face?” This is a pretty plain meaning: The Lord wants us to use such setbacks to be able to go forward, seeing the problem as a challenge and an opportunity and learning point.

Joshua is told to find the source of the wrong and the defeat. From all the tribes, one tribe will be selected by the Lord. From all its families, one family will be chosen. From all its households, one household will be chosen, and from that household, one man will be chosen. And Achan was the man and he is brought out. (Arcana Caelestia 5135)

This drawing-by-lot is a remarkable picture of our spiritual self-examination. We’re told that to make our general confession of ‘having done what we should not have done’ is almost worthless because we are likely to just carry on the same afterwards. (Arcana Caelestia 8390) Our personal inventory must be specific. What kind of thoughts have I been allowing myself recently? What did that make me feel in my heart? Did I welcome it or want nothing to do with it? It’s a kind of pinpointing, and it leads us to Achan, whose name in Hebrew means ‘trouble’ and ‘troubler’. (The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine 164)

Achan, discovered, doesn't hide or deny his wrongdoing but openly admits that he has sinned against the Lord. He'd seen a beautiful garment, much silver, and a chunk of gold, and took them, and hid them in the earth in the middle of his tent. He confesses and indeed, his confession is transparent. So must our confession be when we see things in ourselves that go against the Lord’s truths and ways. They bring forth his stolen goods from his tent.

Then, in a comprehensive way, Joshua took everything Achan owned in its entirety, including the stolen goods, to the Valley of Achor (a name again meaning ‘trouble’) and stoned him and all his family and burned them with fire and raised a heap of stones over it all. This, to us, might well sound like a brutal and an unwarranted punishment.

Spiritually, the Lord does not punish us, ever. Rather, he commands that we turn from our evils, and suffer the consequences if we don't. The Lord does this to help and encourage us to stop following our own way and to commit ourselves to following and living His way. We can only conquer Canaan, representing heaven, when we do this. 8390. Those who merely acknowledge that they are complete sinners, holding themselves guilty of every evil, yet do not examine themselves, that is, see their own evils, are making a confession.
