Numbers 15

Studie

1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them, When you have come to the land of your dwellings, which I give to you,

3 and will make a fire··offering to Jehovah, a burnt··offering or a sacrifice, for a special vow, or in a freewill offering, or in your solemn··occasions, to make a restful smell to Jehovah, from the herd, or from the flock;

4 then he who offers his offering to Jehovah shall offer a gift··offering of a tenth of flour mixed with the fourth of a hin of oil.

5 And the fourth part of a hin of wine for a poured··offering shalt thou make with the burnt··offering or sacrifice, for one lamb.

6 Or for a ram, thou shalt make for a gift··offering two tenths of flour mixed with a third of a hin of oil.

7 And for a poured··offering thou shalt offer a third of a hin of wine, for a restful smell to Jehovah.

8 And when thou makest the young of the herd for a burnt··offering, or for a sacrifice to make··a··special vow, or for peace··offerings to Jehovah,

9 then he shall offer upon a son of the herd a gift··offering of three tenths of flour mixed with half a hin of oil.

10 And thou shalt offer for a poured··offering half a hin of wine, a fire··offering, a restful smell to Jehovah.

11 In··this··manner shall it be done for one ox, or for one ram, or for an animal··of··the··flock among the lambs or among the goats.

12 According··to the number that you shall make, so you shall make for every one according··to their number.

13 Every native of the country shall do these things in··this··manner, to offer a fire··offering, a restful smell to Jehovah.

14 And when a sojourner sojourn with you, or whoever be in your midst for your generations, and will make a fire··offering, a restful smell to Jehovah, as you do, so he shall do.

15 One statute shall be for you of the assembly, and also for the sojourner who sojourns with you, an eternal statute for your generations; as you are, so shall the sojourner be before Jehovah.

16 One law and One judgment shall be for you, and for the sojourner who sojourns with you.

17 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

18 Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them, When you come into the land whither I bring you,

19 then it shall be, that, when you eat of the bread of the land, you shall lift··up an uplifting to Jehovah.

20 You shall lift··up a cake of the first of your dough for an uplifting; as you do the uplifting of the threshing··floor, so you shall lift· it ·up.

21 From the first of your dough you shall give to Jehovah an uplifting for your generations.

22 And if you have erred, and not done all these commandments, which Jehovah has spoken to Moses,

23 Even all that Jehovah has commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day that Jehovah commanded it, and beyond unto your generations;

24 then it shall be, if anything be done by ignorance away from the eyes of the congregation, that all the congregation shall make one bullock, a son of the herd, for a burnt··offering, for a restful smell to Jehovah, with its gift··offering, and its poured··offering, according··to the judgment, and one male goat of the goats for a sin offering.

25 And the priest shall make··atonement for all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and it shall be pardoned them; for it is ignorance; and they shall bring their offering, a fire··offering to Jehovah, and their sin offering before Jehovah, for their ignorance,

26 and it shall be pardoned to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and the sojourner who sojourns among them; because all the people were in ignorance.

27 And if a certain soul sin by ignorance, then he shall offer a she-goat, a daughter of a year for a sin offering.

28 And the priest shall make··atonement for the soul who sins being··ignorant, when he sins in ignorance before Jehovah, to make··atonement for him; and it shall be pardoned to him.

29 You shall have one law for him who does something by ignorance, for the native among the sons of Israel, and for the sojourner who sojourns in their midst.

30 But the soul who does anything with a high hand, from the native and from the sojourner, he blasphemes Jehovah; and that soul shall be cut··off from among his people.

31 Because he despises the word of Jehovah, and has made· His commandment ·of··none··effect, that soul being cut··off shall be cut··off; her iniquity shall be upon her.

32 And the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, and they found a man gathering··up wood on the Sabbath day.

33 And they who found him gathering··up wood offered him to Moses and unto Aaron, and to all the congregation.

34 And they placed him under guard, for it was not made··clear what should be done to him.

35 And Jehovah said to Moses, Dying the man shall be made to die; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.

36 And all the congregation brought· him ·out to outside the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

37 And Jehovah said to Moses, saying,

38 Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them that they make for themselves fringes on the wings of their garments unto their generations, and that they put on the fringe of the wing a strand of blue;

39 and it shall be to you for a fringe, that you may see it, and remember all the commandments of Jehovah, and do them; and that you explore not after your own heart and after your own eyes, after which you committed··harlotry;

40 so··that you may remember, and do all My commandments, and be holy to your God.

41 I am Jehovah your God, who brought· you ·out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; I am Jehovah your God.

2276. 'Perhaps thirty will be found [there]' means some existence of conflict. This is clear from the meaning of the number 'thirty'. The reason 'thirty' means some existence of conflict, thus a small amount of conflict, is that this number is the product of 'five', meaning that which is small, times 'six', meaning toil or conflict, as shown in Volume One, in 649, 720, 737, 900, 1709.

[2] Hence also that number, wherever one reads it in the Word, means something relatively small, as in Zechariah,

I said to them, If it is good in your eyes, give me my wages; and if not, withhold them. And they weighed out my wages, thirty pieces of silver. And Jehovah said to me, Throw it to the potter, the magnificent price I was valued at among them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw it into the house of Jehovah, to the potter. Zechariah 11:12-13.

This stands for how small a value those people placed on the Lord's merit, and on redemption and salvation from Him. 'The poster' stands for reformation and regeneration.

[3] This explains the reference to the same thirty pieces of silver in Matthew,

They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him whom they had bought from the children of Israel, and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me. Matthew 27:9-10.

From these words it is quite clear that 'thirty' here stands for the small price set on him. A slave, who was not considered to be worth much, was valued at thirty shekels, as is clear in Moses,

If the ox gores a slave or a servant-girl, the owner shall give to his master thirty shekels of silver; and the ox shall be stoned. Exodus 21:32.

How little a slave was considered to be worth is clear from verses 20-21, of that same chapter. In the internal sense 'a slave' stands for toil.

[4] The reason Levites were called upon for ministerial duty - which is described as one 'coming to perform military service and to do the work in the tent [of meeting] - from thirty up to fifty years of age', Numbers 4:3, 23, 30, 35, 39, 43, was that 'thirty' means those who were beginners, thus those who as yet could perform little of what was meant in the spiritual sense by 'military service'.

[5] There are other places in the Word besides these where 'thirty' is mentioned, such as in the requirement that with a young bull a minchah of three tenths [of fine flour] was to be offered by them, Numbers 15:9. Such was required because the sacrifice of an ox represented natural good, as shown above in 2180, and natural good is small in comparison with spiritual good, which was represented by the sacrifice of a ram, and smaller still in comparison with celestial good, which was represented by the sacrifice of a lamb, with which sacrifices a different number of tenths to the minchah were required, as is clear in verses 4-6 of that chapter, and also in Numbers 28:12-13, 20-21, 28-29; 29:3-4, 9-10, 14-15. These differing numbers of tenths, or proportions, would never have been commanded if they had not embodied heavenly arcana within them.

[6] 'Thirty' again stands for that which is small in Mark,

The seed which fell into good ground yielded fruit, growing up and increasing. One bore thirty-fold, and another sixty, and another a hundred. Mark 4:8.

'Thirty' stands for a small yield and for that which has laboured to only a small extent. Those numbers would not have been specified unless they had embodied the things meant by them.
