Leviticus 2

Studie

1 And when a soul will offer an offering, a gift··offering to Jehovah, his offering shall be of flour; and he shall pour oil on it, and put frankincense on it;

2 and he shall bring it to the sons of Aaron, the priests; and he shall take··a··handful from there, his full handful from its flour, and from its oil, on all its frankincense; and the priest shall burn··as··incense the memorial of it upon the altar, a fire··offering, a restful smell to Jehovah:

3 and the remnant of the gift··offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons’; it is a holy of holies of the fire··offerings of Jehovah.

4 And if thou offer an offering of a gift··offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil.

5 And if thine offering be a gift··offering on a griddle, it shall be unleavened flour, mixed with oil.

6 Thou shalt morsel· it ·out in morsels, and pour oil on it; it is a gift··offering.

7 And if thine offering be a gift··offering of the cooking··pot, it shall be made of flour with oil.

8 And thou shalt bring the gift··offering that is made of these things to Jehovah; and when it is offered to the priest, he shall present it to the altar.

9 And the priest shall lift··high from the gift··offering a memorial of it, and shall burn· it ·as··incense upon the altar; it is a fire··offering, a restful smell to Jehovah.

10 And the remainder of the gift··offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons’; it is a holy of holies of the fire··offerings of Jehovah.

11 All the gift··offering, which you shall offer to Jehovah, shall not be made with leaven; for you shall not burn··for··incense any yeast, or any honey, in a fire··offering to Jehovah.

12 As for the offering of the firstfruits, you shall offer them to Jehovah; but they shall not be offered··up on the altar for a restful smell.

13 And every offering of thy gift··offering shalt thou salt with salt; neither shalt thou cause the salt of the covenant of thy God to cease from thy gift··offering; with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

14 And if thou offer a gift··offering of thy firstfruits to Jehovah, thou shalt offer a gift··offering of thy firstfruits of maturing··ears, parched grain by the fire, and groats* of fresh··grain.

15 And thou shalt put oil on it, and set frankincense on it; it is a gift··offering.

16 And the priest shall burn··as··incense the memorial of it, from its groats, and from its oil, on all its frankincense; it is a fire··offering to Jehovah.

8680. 'And Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God' means worship springing from the good of love and the truths of faith. This is clear from the meaning of 'a burnt offering and sacrifices' as representatives of celestial and spiritual realities that belong to internal worship, 'burnt offerings' being representative of celestial realities, that is, aspects of the good of love, and 'sacrifices' being representative of spiritual ones, that is, aspects of the truth of faith, dealt with in 922, 923, 1823, 2180, 2805, 2807, 2830, 3218, 3519, 6905. The representation of 'burnt offerings' as aspects of the good of love, and of 'sacrifices' as aspects of the truth of faith, is clear from their institution - from the requirement that in burnt offerings everything was to be burnt, both the flesh and the blood, but that in sacrifices the flesh was to be eaten, as may be seen in chapters 1-5 of Leviticus; Numbers 28; and in Deuteronomy, where the following words occur,

You are to present, your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of Jehovah your God; the blood of the sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of Jehovah your God, and the flesh you shall eat. Deuteronomy 12:27.

The reason why those two realities were represented by the burnt offerings and sacrifices is that burnt offerings and sacrifices represented all worship of God in general, 923, 6905; and worship of God in general is founded on love and faith. Without these it is not worship, only ritual such as is performed by the external man who has no internal and so no life within him.
