Jeremiah 33

Studie

1 And the word of Jehovah was unto Jeremiah a second time (and he was still restrained in the court of the prison), saying,

2 Thus says Jehovah her maker, Jehovah who formed her, to establish her, Jehovah is His name:

3 Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and tell thee of great and fortified things; thou knowest them not.

4 For thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are torn··down by the embankments, and by the sword:

5 they are coming to fight the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them* with human corpses, whom I have smitten in My anger and in My fury, and I have hidden My face from this city on··account··of all their evil.

6 Behold, I will cause health and healing to come··up to her, and I will heal them, and will reveal to them the crown of peace and truth.

7 And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.

8 And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against Me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against Me.

9 And it shall be for Me for a name of joy, for praise and for adornment to all the nations of the earth, who shall hear all the goodness that I do for them; and they shall dread and tremble over all the goodness and over all the peace, which I will do for her.

10 Thus says Jehovah: Yet··again there shall be heard in this place, which you say is a waste without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolated, without man, and without those who dwell in her, and without beast,

11 the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who shall say, Confess Jehovah of Armies; for Jehovah is good, for His mercy is for eternity; and of those who shall bring· the offering of thanksgiving ·into the house of Jehovah. For I will cause the captivity of the land to return, as at the first, says Jehovah.

12 Thus says Jehovah of Armies: Still in this place, which is a waste without man and without beast, and in all its cities, shall be a home of shepherds causing their flocks to lie··down.

13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places around Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass yet··again under the hands of him who counts them, says Jehovah.

14 Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will raise··up that good thing which I have spoken to the house of Israel and concerning the house of Judah.

15 In those days, and at that time, I will cause the growing··Branch of justice to grow to David; and He shall do judgment and justice in the land.

16 In those days Judah shall be saved, and Jerusalem shall reside securely; and this is the name* with which He shall be called: Jehovah-our-justice.

17 For thus says Jehovah: unto David there shall not be cut··off a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;

18 and to the priests, the Levites, there shall not be cut··off a man from before Me offering··up a burnt··offering, and burning· a gift··offering ·for··incense, and making a sacrifice all the days.

19 And the word of Jehovah was unto Jeremiah, saying,

20 Thus says Jehovah: If you can make··of··none··effect My covenant of the day, and My covenant of the night, that there should not be day and night in their times;

21 then even My covenant will be made··of··none··effect: with David My servant, from his having a son to reign on his throne; and with the Levites the priests, from being My ministers.

22 As the army of the heavens cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the seed of David My servant, and the Levites who minister to Me.

23 And the word of Jehovah was to Jeremiah, saying,

24 Seest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which Jehovah has chosen among them, He has even rejected them? And they have disdained My people, from being any··more a nation before them.

25 Thus says Jehovah, If My covenant be not by··day and night, then I have not set the stated times of the heavens and the earth.

26 even the seed of Jacob and David My servant I will reject, so that I will not* take from his seed rulers for the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for I will cause their captivity to return, and have··compassion on them.

Apocalypse Revealed # 778

778. "And wine, oil, flour, wheat." This symbolically means that these Roman Catholics no longer have any worship that springs from celestial truths and goods, because they have nothing inwardly in their worship that corresponds to the aforesaid things.

This statement is similar to ones explained just above and in previous numbers, the only difference being that the valuables here symbolize celestial goods and truths.

Just what goods and truths are called celestial, and what spiritual, may be seen in no. 773 above. It may also be seen that the Roman Catholics meant here possess none of these, nor are there any in their worship. For, as we said above, the goods and truths of doctrine are present in worship as the soul is in the body. Consequently worship without these is a lifeless worship. Of such a character is worship that is reverent in outward appearances, but which has in it no internal reverence.

That wine symbolizes truth springing from the goodness of love may be seen in no. 316 above. That oil symbolizes the goodness of love will be seen in the next number. Flour symbolizes celestial truth, and wheat symbolizes celestial good.

[2] Wine, oil, flour and wheat symbolize the truths and goods in worship, because they were the ingredients in drink offerings and grain offerings, which were offered on the altar along with other sacrifices, and sacrifices and other offerings offered on the altar symbolize worship, since it was in these that the Israelites' worship chiefly consisted.

That drink offerings, which were ones of wine, were offered on the altar along with other sacrifices, can be seen in Exodus 29:40; Leviticus 23:12-13, 18-19; Numbers 15:2-15; 28:11-15, 18-31; 29:1-7ff.; and also in Isaiah 57:6; 65:11; Jeremiah 7:18; 44:17-19; Ezekiel 20:28; Joel 1:9; Psalms 16:4; Deuteronomy 32:38.

That oil was also offered on the altar along with sacrifices, can be seen in Exodus 29:40.

That grain offerings, which consisted of wheat flour, were offered on the altar along with other sacrifices, can be seen in Exodus 29:40).

It can be seen from this that these four articles - wine, oil, flour and wheat - were sacred and celestial elements in their worship.
