Jeremiah 33

Studie

And the word of Jehovah was unto Jeremiah a second time (and he was still restrained in the court of the prison), saying,

Thus says Jehovah her maker, Jehovah who formed her, to establish her, Jehovah is His name:

Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and tell thee of great and fortified things; thou knowest them not.

For thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are torn··down by the embankments, and by the sword:

they are coming to fight the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them* with human corpses, whom I have smitten in My anger and in My fury, and I have hidden My face from this city on··account··of all their evil.

Behold, I will cause health and healing to come··up to her, and I will heal them, and will reveal to them the crown of peace and truth.

And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.

And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against Me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against Me.

And it shall be for Me for a name of joy, for praise and for adornment to all the nations of the earth, who shall hear all the goodness that I do for them; and they shall dread and tremble over all the goodness and over all the peace, which I will do for her.

Thus says Jehovah: Yet··again there shall be heard in this place, which you say is a waste without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolated, without man, and without those who dwell in her, and without beast,

the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who shall say, Confess Jehovah of Armies; for Jehovah is good, for His mercy is for eternity; and of those who shall bring· the offering of thanksgiving ·into the house of Jehovah. For I will cause the captivity of the land to return, as at the first, says Jehovah.

Thus says Jehovah of Armies: Still in this place, which is a waste without man and without beast, and in all its cities, shall be a home of shepherds causing their flocks to lie··down.

In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places around Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass yet··again under the hands of him who counts them, says Jehovah.

Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will raise··up that good thing which I have spoken to the house of Israel and concerning the house of Judah.

In those days, and at that time, I will cause the growing··Branch of justice to grow to David; and He shall do judgment and justice in the land.

In those days Judah shall be saved, and Jerusalem shall reside securely; and this is the name* with which He shall be called: Jehovah-our-justice.

For thus says Jehovah: unto David there shall not be cut··off a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;

and to the priests, the Levites, there shall not be cut··off a man from before Me offering··up a burnt··offering, and burning· a gift··offering ·for··incense, and making a sacrifice all the days.

And the word of Jehovah was unto Jeremiah, saying,

Thus says Jehovah: If you can make··of··none··effect My covenant of the day, and My covenant of the night, that there should not be day and night in their times;

then even My covenant will be made··of··none··effect: with David My servant, from his having a son to reign on his throne; and with the Levites the priests, from being My ministers.

As the army of the heavens cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the seed of David My servant, and the Levites who minister to Me.

And the word of Jehovah was to Jeremiah, saying,

Seest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which Jehovah has chosen among them, He has even rejected them? And they have disdained My people, from being any··more a nation before them.

Thus says Jehovah, If My covenant be not by··day and night, then I have not set the stated times of the heavens and the earth.

even the seed of Jacob and David My servant I will reject, so that I will not* take from his seed rulers for the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for I will cause their captivity to return, and have··compassion on them.

David

David the King

David is one of the most significant figures in the Bible. He was a musician, one of history’s greatest poets, the boy warrior who killed the giant Goliath, a devout servant of God, a great leader of men and ultimately Israel’s greatest king. His stories cover the second half of the First Book of Samuel and all of the Second Book of Samuel, and his legacy was such that Jesus himself was born in the “City of David” to fulfill prophecies. For all that, David the man was not perfect. Most notoriously, he ordered his soldiers to make sure one of their comrades was killed in battle because he had seen the man’s wife bathing and wanted her as his own. He was also willing to actually ally with the Philistines for a time, while his predecessor Saul was still king. But in spiritual terms, David’s meaning matches his reputation: He represents the Lord, and especially the Lord as we are able to know Him and understand Him. The Writings call this “divine truth,” and it can be our ultimate guide if we want to serve the Lord and make His desires our own. This representation makes sense if we look at following the Lord as a whole picture. There are essentially two elements. First, we need to accept the Lord, believe in Him, open our hearts to Him, worship Him. These are matters of affection, and related to the Lord’s divine goodness. And they are generally represented by priests, who lead worship and perform rituals. Second, we need to act in accord with the Lord’s wishes: We need to serve others, care for those in need, defend the defenseless and work to make life and society better for everyone. These actions require thought, judgment, design, and are thus related to Lord’s divine truth, or divine guidance. They are generally represented by kings, who are men of action and are responsible for the activity of their nations. As the greatest of the kings, David represents this truth in its greatest form.
