Genesis 23

Studie

And the lives* of Sarah were a hundred years and twenty years and seven years, the years of the lives of Sarah.

And Sarah died in Kiriath-arba, it is Hebron in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to wail for Sarah, and to weep for her.

And Abraham rose··up from upon the faces of his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying,

I am a sojourner and a lodger with you; give to me a possession of a sepulcher with you, and I will bury my dead from before me.

And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,

Hear us, my lord, thou art a prince* of God in the midst of us; in the choice of our sepulchers bury thy dead; No man of us shall hold··back from thee his sepulcher, from burying thy dead.

And Abraham rose··up, and bowed· himself ·down to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth.

And he spoke with them, saying, If it··is with your soul to bury my dead from before me, hear me, and intercede for me with Ephron the son of Zohar.

That he may give to me the cave of Machpelah, which he has, which is in the end of his field; in full silver* let him give it to me, in the midst of you, for a possession of a sepulcher.

And Ephron was sitting in the midst of the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the ears of the sons of Heth, to all that came··into the gate of his city, saying,

No, my lord, hear me; the field I give to thee, and the cave that is in it, to thee I give it; before the eyes of the sons of my people I give it to thee; bury thy dead.

And Abraham bowed· himself ·down before the people of the land.

And he spoke to Ephron in the ears of the people of the land, saying, Surely, if thou would, hear me; I will give the silver* of the field; take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.

And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,

My lord, hear me; land of* four hundred shekels of silver, what is that between me and thee? And now bury thy dead.

And Abraham hearkened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver of which he had spoken in the ears of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, such as passes at the trader.

And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and every tree which was in the field, which was in all its border all around, were secured

for Abraham for an acquisition* before the eyes of the sons of Heth, with all that came··into the gate of his city.

And after this Abraham buried Sarah his wife, in the cave of the field of Machpelah, upon the faces of Mamre, it is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.

And the field and the cave that is in it were secured for Abraham for a possession of a sepulcher from the sons of Heth.

2833. 'And Abraham went and took the ram' means their release effected by the Lord's Divine Human. This is clear from the representation of 'Abraham' as the Lord, here the Lord as to the Divine Human - for when Jehovah or the angel of Jehovah speaks to Abraham, Jehovah or the angel of Jehovah in that case means the Divine itself, and 'Abraham' the Divine Human; and from the meaning of 'a ram' as those who are spiritual, 2830. From this it is evident that 'Abraham went and took the ram caught in a thicket by its horns' means the release of those who are spiritual effected by the Lord's Divine Human. As regards the fact that but for the Lord's Coming into the world spiritual people could not possibly have been saved, see 2661, 2716, and that their salvation and release was effected by the Lord's Divine Human, 2716.
