1 Umbono kaObhadiya. Itshilo iNkosi uYehova ngokusingisele kwelakwaEdom, ukuthi, Sive udaba oluvela kuYehova, kuthunywe isigidimi ezintlangeni sokuthi, Suka nime, sisukele phezulu kulo, silwe nalo.

2 Yabonani, ndikwenze wamncinane ezintlangeni, udelekile kakhulu.

3 Ukukhukhumala kwentliziyo yakho kukulukuhlile, wena uhleliyo emfanteni wengxondorha, okhaya liphezulu, othi entliziyweni yakhe, Ngubani na oya kundihlisela ehlabathini?

4 Ukuba uthe wakhela phezulu njengexhalanga, nokuba ithe indlu yakho yabekwa phakathi kweenkwenkwezi, ndokuhlisa nalapho; utsho uYehova.

5 Ukuba amasela ebethe eza kuwe, ukuba amanyangaza ebethe eza ebusuku (hayi, ukunqunyulwa kwakho!), ebengayi kuba anele na? Ukuba babethe beza kuwe abavuni beediliya, babengayi kushiya okungabhikicwayo na?

6 Hayi, ukuphengululeka kwezinto zakwaEsawu! Hayi ukukhanukwa kwezinto zakhe eziqhushekiweyo!

7 Onke amadoda abenqophisene nawe akukhaphile, ada esa emdeni; akulukuhlile, akweyisile amadoda abexolelene nawe. Isonka sakho asenze inxeba okulalwa ngalo, phantsi kwakho. Akukho kuqonda kuye.

8 Andiyi kuthi na ngaloo mini, utsho uYehova, ndizitshabalalise izilumko kwaEdom, neengqondi ezintabeni zakwaEsawu?

9 Aya kuqhiphuka umbilini amagorha akho, Teman, ukuze banqanyulwe bonke ezintabeni zakwaEsawu ngokubulawa.

10 Ngenxa yokumgonyamela kwakho umninawa wakho uYakobi, kuya kukugubungela ukudana, unqanyulwe ngonaphakade.

11 Ngemini owabumi malunga naye, mini abasemzini bathimba ubutyebi bakhe, abolunye uhlanga beza emasangweni akhe, bayenzela amaqashiso iYerusalem: nawe wawunjengomnye wabo.

12 Musa ukukhangela kwimini yomninawa wakho ngemini yeshwangusha lakhe, ungabavuyeleli oonyana bakaYuda ngemini yenkxwaleko yabo; ungasineki ngemini yembandezelo.

13 Musa ukungena esangweni labantu bam ngemini yeshwangusha labo, ungakhangeli nawe ebubini babo ngemini yeshwangusha labo, ungasi sandla ebutyebini babo ngemini yeshwangusha labo.

14 Musa ukuma ekwahlukaneni kweendlela, ukuze unqumle abasabayo bakubo; ungabanikeli abaseleyo bakubo ngemini yembandezelo.

15 Ngokuba isondele imini kaYehova kuzo zonke iintlanga. Njengoko wenze ngako, kuya kwenjiwa njalo kuwe; okwenzileyo kuya kubuyela entlokweni yakho.

16 Ngokuba njengoko nisele ngako entabeni yam engcwele, ziya kuhlala zisela ngokunjalo zonke iintlanga, zisele zibizele, zibe njengabangabangakho.

17 Ke, entabeni yeZiyon kuya kubakho okusindileyo, kube yingcwele; indlu kaYakobi izihluthe iindawo eyazihluthwayo.

18 Indlu kaYakobi iya kuba ngumlilo, nendlu kaYosefu ibe lilangatye; Indlu kaEsawu ibe ziindiza, batshise phakathi kwabo, babadle, kungabikho usalayo wasendlwini kaEsawu; ngokuba uYehova uthethile.

19 Abakwelasezantsi bozithimba iintaba zakwaEsawu; nabasezithabazini bahluthe amaFilisti; bahluthe isisimi sakwaEfrayim, nesisimi sakwaSamari; uBhenjamin ahluthe elaseGiliyadi.

20 Abathinjwa bakule mpi yonyana bakaSirayeli baya kubahlutha abangamaKanan, bade base eTsarefa, abathinjwa baseYerusalem abaseSefaradi bahluthe imizi yelasezantsi.

21 Konyuka abasindisi entabeni yeZiyon, ukuze bazigwebe iintaba zakwaEsawu, ubukumkani bube bobu kaYehova.

Exploring the Meaning of Obhadiya 1

In Obadiah 1, the sole chapter in this book, there's a prophecy of destruction for Edom. The people of the land of Edom -- the Edomites -- were descendants of Esau, so they were cousins and neighbors of the Jewish people.

In Swedenborg's sketch of the internal sense of this part of the Word, (The Inner Meaning of the Prophets and Psalms 213), we find this:

- Edom represents people who are in self-intelligence and who pervert the sense of the letter of the word.
- In Obadiah 1:1-3, They must be combated, because they believe themselves to be more intelligent than others.
- In 1:4-5, They defend falsities by natural light, but they will perish, and with them, the falsities themselves.
- In 1:6, They have pride.
- In 1:7, They have no truths.
- In 1:8-9, They will perish on the day of judgment, because they have oppressed the church.
- In 1:10-14, They destroy the church still further, and this is their delight.
- In 1:15-16, Destruction will come upon them on the day of judgment.
- In 1:17, A new church will come into existence.
- In 1:18, in place of the former church, which is condemned.
- In 1:19-21, The new church will be in the understanding of truth, and those that are in it will be saved.

This story was written around 2600 years ago. There were people alive then who were impressed with their own intelligence. They didn't respect the Word's inner meaning, and twisted its literal meaning. In Obadiah 1:10, we see them even taking delight in destroying true ideas.

Today, maybe it's easier than ever to be impressed by our own intelligence, because we can do so much. We're putting vehicles on Mars, and making robots that can do back flips. But how should we regard the Word? We need to look at its deep meaning, to really understand spiritual truths -- so that we have the fundamental spiritual wisdom to hold and harness our intelligence -- and to be part of the Lord's church, where we're open to receiving his good and truth, and living by it.
