11 Wesuka uElikana, waya endlwini yakhe; ke umntwana ebelungiselela kuYehova phambi kukaEli umbingeleli.

12 Ke kaloku oonyana bakaEli babengamatshijolo, bengamazi uYehova.

13 Kwanesilunga sababingeleli esiphuma ebantwini, akubon’ ukuba umntu ubingelela umbingelelo, kwaza kweza umfana wakwambingeleli, xa iphekiweyo inyama, enefolokhwe emazinyo mathathu esandleni sakhe,

21 UYehova wamvelela uHana; wamitha, wazala oonyana abathathu, neentombi ezimbini. Yakhula inkwenkwe enguSamuweli ikuYehova.

22 Ke kaloku uEli ubeselemdala kakhulu; wayiva yonke into ababeyenza oonyana bakhe kumaSirayeli onke, kwanokuba babelala nabafazi ababekhonza emnyango wentente yokuhlangana.

23 Wathi kubo, Yini na ukuba nenze izinto ezinjengezi? Kuba izenzo zenu ezibi ndiziva ngaba bantu bonke.

24 Hayi, nyana bam; ngokuba asiludaba luhle olu ndiluvayo mna; nibanga ukuba abantu bakaYehova bagqithise.

25 Ukuba umntu uthe wona umntu, uThixo uyamlamlela; ke ukuba umntu uthe wona kuYehova, ngubani na oya kumlamlela? Abaliphulaphula izwi likayise; kuba uYehova ubefuna ukubabulala.

26 Ke inkwenkwe, uSamuweli, yaya ikhula ngokukhula, ithandeka kuYehova nakubantu.

27 Kweza umntu kaThixo kuEli, wathi kuye, Utsho uYehova ukuthi, Kanene ndazityhila na kwindlu kayihlo, beseYiputa endlwini kaFaro?

28 Ndamnyula na ezizweni zonke zakwaSirayeli, ukuba abe ngumbingeleli kum, anyuke esibingelelweni sam, aqhumisele ngeziqhumiso, anxibe iefodi phambi kwam? Ndayinika yonke indlu kayihlo konke ukudla kwasemlilweni koonyana bakaSirayeli?

29 Yini na ke ukuba niwunyathelele phantsi umbingelelo wam nomnikelo wam wokudla, endiwise umthetho ngawo ekhayeni lam, usuke ubazukise oonyana bakho ngaphezu kwam, ukuze nizityebise ngelona nqatha leminikelo yonke yamaSirayeli, abantu bam?

30 Ngoko utsho uYehova, uThixo kaSirayeli, ukuthi, Ndatsho okunene ukuthi, Indlu yakho nendlu kayihlo yohamba phambi kwam kude kuse ephakadeni; kungoku utsho uYehova ukuthi, Oko makube lee kum; ngokuba ondizukisayo ndiya kumzukisa, abandidelayo bacukucezwe.

31 Yabona, imihla iyeza, endiya kuyinqumla ingalo yakho, nengalo yendlu kayihlo, kungabikho ngwevu endlwini kayihlo;

32 ukubone ukubandezelwa kwekhaya lam ezintweni zonke uThixo aya kuwenzela okulungileyo ngazo amaSirayeli; kungabikho ngwevu endlwini yakho imihla yonke.

33 Ke andiyi kunqumla mntu wonke wakwakho esibingelelweni sam, ukuze amehlo akho aphele, nomphefumlo wakho uthe; kufe kungamadoda konke ukwanda kwendlu yakho.

34 Nguwo lo umqondiso kuwe, oya kubafikela oonyana bakho bobabini, uHofeni noPinehasi: baya kufa bobabini ngamhla mnye.

35 Ndiya kuzivelisela umbingeleli othembekileyo, oya kwenza njengoko kusentliziyweni yam, nasemphefumlweni wam; ndimakhele indlu eqinileyo, ahambe phambi komthanjiswa wam yonke imihla.

36 Kothi, lowo useleyo endlwini yakho, eze azigobe kuye ngenxa yeqhosha lesilivere nesuntswana lesonka, athi, Khawundifake komnye umsebenzi wobubingeleli, ukuze ndidle iqhekeza lesonka.

Exploring the Meaning of 1 Samuel 2

Chapter 2 of the Book of Samuel begins with Hannah’s prayerful song of praise to God. It's a big contrast to the sadness and desperation of her prayer in the previous chapter when she begged for a child. In many ways this is a model for the song that Mary sang, in Luke 1:46-55 after hearing from the angel Gabriel that she was to be the mother of the Lord.

In this chapter, the High Priest, Eli, had grown so old that he had turned his priestly duties over to his sons Hophni and Phinehas. However, these sons were corrupt and had separated themselves from God. They took the best part of the meat offerings for themselves, even before the meat had been properly sacrificed, and took advantage of the woman who worked at the gate of the sanctuary.

That corrupt state is contrasted with the wholesome ministry of the young boy Samuel, who wore a simple tunic (called an ephod) given to him each year by his mother as he grew.

Reports of his sons’ wrongdoings reached Eli, and he pleaded with them to stop, but they did not change their ways and he did nothing to punish them. Then, a messenger from God came with a message of doom for not only the two sons, but for the whole family.

As Anita Dole describes the situation, in her "Bible Study Notes":

"This is a picture of a state in which worship is degraded by being used for self-interest and self-exaltation, and when the high priest in us - that inner dictate which relates us to the Lord - does not take steps to correct the evil, although it sees it. It has become dim of sight and is no longer able to receive directly the voice of the Lord. In 1 Samuel 2:17, quoted above, there is the suggestion of the harm which such a state does to others as well as
to ourselves. Many people are turned against the church by the self-seeking and hypocrisy they see in some of its members. Our duty to keep our worship sincere and to live according to the teachings of the church is not for our own salvation alone. The Lord's service requires of us constant watchfulness and ever-renewed devotion." - Anita Dole, Bible Study Notes, "The Birth of Samuel", © 2001 by The Swedenborg Foundation.

This is a chapter focused on contrasts. On one side are Hannah and Samuel who are faithful to the Lord. We see Hannah praising Him for the wonderful gifts that He provides, especially the gift of her son. This story helps us realize that all children are a gift from God. We should never view them as being our possessions. Instead, they are always God’s children whom we have been blessed to be able to nurture for a time and help grow.

On the other side are the sons of Eli, who profaned what was holy as a mark of self-love and disdain for God.

At the heart of this is a message about true worship. This true worship is a product of heart-felt adoration of God, together with genuine humility (see Arcana Coelestia 1153).
