1 Y SIENDO Josué ya viejo, entrado en días, Jehová le dijo: Tú eres ya viejo, de edad avanzada, y queda aún muy mucha tierra por poseer.

2 Esta es la tierra que queda; todos los términos de los Philisteos, y toda Gessuri;

3 Desde Sihor, que está delante de Egipto, hasta el término de Accarón al norte, repútase de los Cananeos: cinco provincias de los Philisteos; los Gazeos, Asdodios, Ascalonitas, Getheos, y Accaronitas; y los Heveos;

4 Al mediodía toda la tierra de los Cananeos, y Mehara que es de los Sidonios, hasta Aphec, hasta el término del Amorrheo;

5 Y la tierra de los Gibleos, y todo el Líbano hacia donde sale el sol, desde Baal-gad á las raíces del monte Hermón, hasta entrar en Hamath;

6 Todos los que habitan en las montañas desde el Líbano hasta las aguas calientes, todos los Sidonios; yo los desarraigaré delante de lo hijos de Israel: solamente repartirás tú por suerte el país á los Israelitas por heredad, como te he mandado.

7 Parte, pues, tú ahora esta tierra en heredad á las nueve tribus, y á la media tribu de Manasés.

8 Porque la otra media recibió su heredad con los Rubenitas y Gaditas, la cual les dió Moisés de la otra parte del Jordán al oriente, según que se la dió Moisés siervo de Jehová:

9 Desde Aroer, que está á la orilla del arroyo de Arnón, y la ciudad que está en medio del arroyo, y toda la campiña de Medeba, hasta Dibón;

10 Y todas las ciudades de Sehón rey de los Amorrheos, el cual reinó en Hesbón, hasta los términos de los hijos de Ammón;

11 Y Galaad, y los términos de Gessuri, y de Maachâti, y todo el monte de Hermón, y toda la tierra de Basán hasta Salchâ:

12 Todo el reino de Og en Basán, el cual reinó en Astaroth y Edrei, el cual había quedado del residuo de los Rapheos; pues Moisés los hirió, y echó.

13 Mas á los de Gessuri y Maachâti no echaron los hijos de Israel; antes Gessur y Maachât habitaron entre los Israelitas hasta hoy.

14 Empero á la tribu de Leví no dió heredad: los sacrificios de Jehová Dios de Israel son su heredad, como él les había dicho.

15 Dió, pues, Moisés á la tribu de los hijos de Rubén conforme á sus familias:

16 Y fué el término de ellos desde Aroer, que está á la orilla del arroyo de Arnón, y la ciudad que está en medio del arroyo, y toda la campiña, hasta Medeba;

17 Hesbón, con todas sus villas que están en la llanura; Dibón, y Bamoth-baal, y Beth-baal-meón;

18 Y Jaas, y Keddemoth, y Mephaath,

19 Y Chîriataim, y Sibma, y Zerethshahar en el monte del valle;

20 Y Beth-peor, y Asdoth-pisga, y Beth-jesimoth;

21 Y todas las ciudades de la campiña, y todo el reino de Sehón rey de los Amorrheos, que reinó en Hesbón, al cual hirió Moisés, y á los príncipes de Madián, Hevi, Recem, y Sur, y Hur, y Reba, príncipes de Sehón que habitaban en aquella tierra.

22 También mataron á cuchillo los hijos de Israel á Balaam adivino, hijo de Beor, con los demás que mataron.

23 Y fueron los términos de los hijos de Rubén el Jordán con su término. Esta fué la herencia de los hijos de Rubén conforme á sus familias, estas ciudades con sus villas.

24 Dió asimismo Moisés á la tribu de Gad, á los hijos de Gad, conforme á sus familias.

25 Y el término de ellos fué Jacer, y todas las ciudades de Galaad, y la mitad de la tierra de los hijos de Ammón hasta Aroer, que está delante de Rabba.

26 Y desde Hesbón hasta Ramath-mispe, y Betonim; y desde Mahanaim hasta el término de Debir:

27 Y la campiña de Beth-aram, y Beth-nimra, y Sucoth, y Saphón, resto del reino de Sehón, rey en Hesbón: el Jordán y su término hasta el cabo de la mar de Cinnereth de la otra parte del Jordán al oriente.

28 Esta es la herencia de los hijos de Gad, por sus familias, estas ciudades con sus villas.

29 También dió Moisés herencia á la media tribu de Manasés: y fué de la media tribu de los hijos de Manasés, conforme á sus familias.

30 El término de ellos fué desde Mahanaim, todo Basán, todo el reino de Og rey de Basán, y todas las aldeas de Jair que están en Basán, sesenta poblaciones.

31 Dióse además la mitad de Galaad, y Astaroth, y Edrei, ciudades del reino de Og en Basán, á los hijos de Machîr, hijo de Manasés, á la mitad de los hijos de Machîr conforme á sus familias.

32 Esto es lo que Moisés repartió en heredad en los llanos de Moab, de la otra parte del Jordán de Jericó, al oriente.

33 Mas á la tribu de Leví no dió Moisés heredad: Jehová Dios de Israel es la heredad de ellos como él les había dicho.

Exploring the Meaning of Joshua 13      

Joshua 13: The start of the tribal territory allocations.

Now that Israel had conquered the land of Canaan, the Lord commanded Joshua to divide the land between the twelve tribes. The next seven chapters tell how the the land of Canaan was divided (see Swedenborg’s work, Arcana Caelestia 1413, to read more about the spiritual meaning).

Chapter 13 deals with the territories given to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and one half of Manasseh, all of which are on the other side of the river Jordan. Reuben was given the southern lands; Gad was given the extensive middle region, much of which is an area called Gilead; and half the tribe of Manasseh received the northern land which is on the other side of the Jordan.

It is also worth noting that the first few verses say much of the land remained to be conquered. However, at the end of chapter 11, we read that Joshua took the whole land as the Lord had commanded Moses.

This may seem contradictory, but spiritually it fits very well. In our regeneration, we aim to conquer our self-centred nature, and allow the Lord to rule us with his truth. This is spiritually ‘conquering the whole land’. But even so, our natural thoughts and desires sometimes rise up to trouble us, and these times are like the parts of the land that remain to be conquered. This is why we must recognize our complete dependence on the Lord (Arcana Caelestia 8326).

The Lord giving land as inheritance to each of the twelve tribes represents the way that He gives us our spiritual life. As we do the work of spiritual ‘conquering’ - living by our purpose to serve the Lord - we feel more and more that we can use our understanding of God and His Word in our actions every day.

The twelve tribes stand for the whole spectrum of what spiritual life involves, and each tribe relates to a specific quality of our spiritual living (Arcana Caelestia 3858). For example, we need to be discerning, positive, respectful of others, and so on. Each tribe has a sizeable area of the land, and is part of the integrity of the whole nation.

The territories given to Reuben, Gad and half of Manasseh are not part of Canaan, but they are linked to it. These areas represent our outward life: the way we work, live, rest, and relate with other people. This is the ‘casing’ of our spiritual life, and it is essential.

The tribe of Reuben – the eldest son of Jacob – stands for our initial need to see the truths from the Lord in the Word. By ‘seeing’ we mean meeting them, looking carefully, being attentive, coming to understand what they ask of us, and realising how important they are. It is not a vague impression that the Lord’s teachings are important, but a real first step for us (Arcana Caelestia 3866).

The tribe of Gad stands for our ability to see that knowledge and truth need to be used to perform good works. Gad’s name means ‘a troop,’ calling to mind soldiers marching in formation to go and sort things out properly. This is something we can apply to ourselves and to the world around us. We just need to watch that it doesn’t get too heavy-handed (See Swedenborg’s work, Apocalypse Explained 435[7]).

The tribe of Manasseh represents the spiritual good which supports our will to live a life which is just, fair and honourable because it is based on God. In fact, Manasseh – which means ‘forgetfulness’ – stands for our need to remember that ‘my will’ is really ‘the Lord’s will for me’. Our will needs to be focused on outward life and also inwardly open to the Lord, which is why half of Manasseh has land beyond the Jordan and half has land within Canaan (Arcana Caelestia 5353).
