1 Og presten Pashur, Immers sønn, som var overtilsynsmann i Herrens hus, hørte Jeremias tale disse ord.

2 Og Pashur slo profeten Jeremias og satte ham i stokken i den øvre Benjamins-port i Herrens hus.

3 Men dagen efter slapp Pashur Jeremias ut av fengslet. Da sa Jeremias til ham: Herren har ikke kalt dig Pashur, men gitt dig navnet Magor Missabib*. / {* redsel rundt omkring; JE 20, 10; 6, 25.}

4 For så sier Herren: Se, jeg gjør dig til en redsel for dig selv og for alle dine venner, og de skal falle for sine fienders sverd, og dine øine skal Se det; og hele Juda vil jeg gi i Babels konges hånd, og han skal føre dem til Babel som fanger og slå dem med sverd.

5 Og jeg vil gi alt godset i denne by og all dens eiendom og alle dens kostbarheter og alle Judas kongers skatter i deres fienders hånd, og de skal røve dem og ta dem og føre dem til Babel.

6 Og du Pashur og alle som bor i ditt hus, I skal vandre bort i fangenskap, og til Babel skal du komme, og der skal du , og der skal du bli begravet, du og alle dine venner, som du har spådd løgn for.

7 Herre! Du overtalte mig, og jeg lot mig overtale; du blev for sterk for mig og fikk overhånd; jeg er blitt til latter hele dagen, hver mann spotter mig.

8 For så ofte jeg taler, må jeg skrike, må jeg rope om vold og ødeleggelse; for Herrens ord er blitt mig til hån og til spott hele dagen.

9 Og jeg tenkte: Jeg vil ikke komme ham i hu og ikke tale mere i hans navn. Men da blev det i mitt hjerte som en brennende ild, innestengt i mine ben, og jeg trettet mig ut med å tåle det, men jeg maktet det ikke.

10 For jeg hørte mange baktale mig - redsel fra alle kanter; de sa: Meld ham! Vi vil melde ham! Alle de menn som jeg levde i fred med, lurte på om jeg skulde falle; de sa: Kanskje han lar sig lokke, så vi kan få overhånd over ham og ta hevn over ham.

11 Men Herren er med mig som en veldig kjempe; derfor skal mine forfølgere snuble og ikke få overhånd; de blir storlig til skamme fordi de ikke fór frem med visdom - en evig vanære, som aldri glemmes.

12 Og Herren, hærskarenes Gud, prøver med rettferdighet, han ser nyrer og hjerte; jeg skal se din hevn over dem, for jeg har lagt min sak frem for dig.

13 Syng for Herren, lov Herren! For han har fridd den fattiges sjel ut av ugjerningsmenns hånd.

14 Forbannet være den dag jeg blev født! Den dag min mor fødte mig, være ikke velsignet!

15 Forbannet være den mann som kom til min far med det budskap: Du har fått en sønn, og som gledet ham storlig.

16 Med den mann skal det gå som med de byer Herren omstyrtet uten skånsel, og han skal høre skrik om morgenen og krigsrop ved middagstid,

17 fordi han ikke drepte mig i mors liv, så min mor blev min grav, og hennes liv fruktsommelig til evig tid.

18 Hvorfor kom jeg da ut av mors liv til å se møie og sorg og ende mine dager i skam?
