← Leviticus 26   Numbers 1 →

1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them, When a man shall make··a··special vow, the souls shall be for Jehovah by thy value.

3 And thy value shall be of the male from a son of twenty years and even··to a son of sixty years, and thy value shall be fifty shekels of silver, by the shekel of the sanctuary.

4 And if it be a female, then thy value shall be thirty shekels.

5 And if it be from a son of five years even··until a son of twenty years, then thy value shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels.

6 And if it be from a son of one month even··until a son of five years, then thy value shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy value shall be three shekels of silver.

7 And if it be from a son of sixty years and above; if he be a male, then thy value shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels.

8 But if he be··poorer than thy value, then he shall make himself stand before the priest, and the priest shall value him; according to the mouth of what the hand of him who vowed attained shall the priest value him.

9 And if it be a beast, of which men offer an offering to Jehovah, all that any man gives of such to Jehovah shall be holy.

10 He shall not change it, and shall not exchange it, good with bad, or bad with good; and if exchanging he shall exchange beast with beast, then it and its exchange of it shall be holy.

11 And if it be any unclean beast, of which they do not offer an offering to Jehovah, then he shall stand the beast before the priest;

12 and the priest shall value it, between the good and between the bad; as thou, the priest, valuest it, so shall it be.

13 But if redeeming he shall redeem it, then he shall add a fifth of it above thy value.

14 And when a man shall sanctify his house as holy to Jehovah, then the priest shall value it, between what is good and what is bad; as the priest shall value it, so shall it be secured.

15 And if he who consecrated it shall redeem his house, then he shall add a fifth of the silver of thy value above it, and it shall be his.

16 And if a man shall sanctify to Jehovah some part of a field of his possession, then thy value shall be according to its seed; an homer of barley seed at fifty shekels of silver.

17 If he sanctify his field from the year of jubilee, according··to thy value it shall be secured.

18 But if he sanctify his field after the jubilee, then the priest shall reckon to him the silver according to* the years that remain, until the year of the jubilee, and it shall be diminished from thy value.

19 And if he who consecrated the field redeeming shall redeem it, then he shall add a fifth of the silver of thy value above it, and it shall be··secure to him.

20 And if he shall not redeem the field, or if he has sold the field to another man, it shall not be redeemed any··more.

21 But the field, when it goes··out in the jubilee, shall be holy to Jehovah, as a field devoted; the possession of it shall be for the priest.

22 And if anyone sanctify to Jehovah a field which he has bought, which is not of the fields of his possession;

23 and the priest shall reckon to him the share of thy value, even to the year of the jubilee; and he shall give thy value in that day, as a holy thing to Jehovah.

24 In the year of the jubilee the field shall return to him of whom it was bought, even to him to whom the possession of the land did belong.

25 And all thy value shall be according to the shekel of the sanctuary; twenty gerahs shall be the shekel.

26 Only the firstborn among beasts, which is··firstborn to Jehovah, no man shall sanctify it; whether it be ox, or sheep; it is for Jehovah.

27 And if it be of an unclean beast, then he shall redeem it with thy value, and shall add a fifth of it above it; and if it not be redeemed, then it shall be sold with thy value.

28 Surely any devoted··thing, that a man shall··devote to Jehovah of all that he has, both of man and of beast, and of the field of his possession, shall not be sold nor redeemed; every devoted··thing, it is a holy of holies to Jehovah.

29 Every devoted··thing*, which shall be devoted from man, shall not be redeemed; dying it shall··be··put··to··death.

30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is Jehovah’s; it is holy to Jehovah.

31 And if a man redeeming shall redeem from’ his tithes, he shall add above it a fifth of it.

32 And every tithe of the herd, or of the flock, all that passes under the rod, the tenth shall be holy to Jehovah.

33 He shall not seek··out whether it be good or bad, and he shall not exchange it; and if exchanging he exchange it, then it shall be, and its exchange of it shall be, holy; it shall not be redeemed.

34 These are the commandments, which Jehovah commanded Moses for the sons of Israel on Mount Sinai.

Explanation of Leviticus 27

Napsal(a) Henry MacLagan

Verses 1-8. Every one who devotes himself to the Lord deliberately with the consent of the will and understanding, is estimated according to his quality or state as to the reception of good in truth from the Lord.

Verses 9-13. Concerning the devotion of the interior natural affections to the service of the Lord and the estimation of their quality.

Verses 14-15. The same with regard to the exterior natural affections.

Verses 16-25. Concerning the devotion of the exterior natural man as to truth to the service of the Lord and its estimation in differing circumstances.

Verses 26-33. Especially, no one ought to ascribe good to himself, because it is entirely from the Lord; impure natural good, which is not from the Lord, is to be replaced by genuine good; no good from the Lord is to be alienated, or applied to selfish purposes; all remains must be acknowledged to be from the Lord; all good and truth with man must be acknowledged to be from the Lord by remains; and no one is allowed, from his self-derived intelligence, to estimate his own quality.

Verse 34. And all these are the laws of Divine Order from the influx of Divine Good into Divine Truth, for the benefit of the spiritual man out of the pure love and mercy of the Lord.
