Judges 12

And the men of Ephraim were summoned and crossed··over northward, and said to Jephthah, Wherefore didst thou cross··over to fight against the sons of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee, we will burn··up thy house over thee with fire.

And Jephthah said to them, I was at strife* exceedingly, I and my people and the sons of Ammon, and I cried unto you, and you saved me not from their hand.

And I saw that none of thee would save me, and I set my soul in the palm of my hand, and crossed··over to the sons of Ammon, and Jehovah gave them into my hand; and why have you come··up this day to fight against me?

And Jephthah brought··together all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, You are the escaped of Ephraim, O Gilead, in the midst of Ephraim, in the midst of Manasseh.

And Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan to Ephraim; and it was, that when the escaped of Ephraim said, Let me cross··over, that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? And if he said, No;

then they said unto him, Say now Shibboleth; and he said Sibboleth; and he could not prepare to speak thus; then they would seize him and slaughter him at the fords of the Jordan: and there fell at this time from Ephraim, forty and two thousand.

And Jephthah judged Israel six years. And Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in the cities of Gilead.

And after him, Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

And he had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he sent abroad; and he brought··in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.

And Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.

And after him, Elon, a Zebulunite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

And Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in Aijalon, in the land of Zebulun.

And after him, Abdon, the son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, judged Israel.

And he had forty sons, and thirty sons of his sons, riding on seventy donkey··colts; and he judged Israel eight years.

And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mountain of the Amalekite.
