2 When there shall arise in the midst of thee a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and he give to thee a sign or a miracle,

3 and the sign or the miracle come to pass, whereof he spoke to thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast· not ·known, and let us serve them;

4 thou shalt not hearken to the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams; for Jehovah your God tempts you, to know whether you love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

5 You shall walk after Jehovah your God, and Him you shall fear, and keep His commandments, and obey His voice, and Him you shall serve, and stick to Him.

6 And that prophet, or that dreamer of a dream, shall be put··to··death; for he has spoken to turn· you ·aside against Jehovah your God, who brought· you ·out from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of servitude*, to impel thee from the way in which Jehovah thy God commanded thee to go. And thou shalt sweep··away the evil from among thee.

7 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy companion, who is as thy soul, incite thee hiddenly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;

8 from the gods of the people which are all around you, near to thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth and to the other end of the earth;

9 for him thou shalt not be··willing, and thou shalt not hearken to him; and thine eye shall not spare him, and thou shalt not have pity, and thou shalt not cover him up;

10 but killing thou shalt kill him; thy hand shall be first upon him to··put· him ·to··death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

11 And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; for he has sought to impel thee away from Jehovah thy God, who brought· thee ·out from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude*.

12 And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any thing of evil as this is among you.

13 If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which Jehovah thy God has given thee to dwell there, saying,

14 Certain men, sons of Belial, have gone··out from among you, and have compelled those dwelling··in their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known;

15 then shalt thou inquire, and search··out, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is worked among you;

16 smiting thou shalt smite those who dwell in that city with the mouth of the sword, dooming it, and all who are in her, and her beasts, with the mouth of the sword.

17 And thou shalt bring··together all the spoil of it, into the midst of her avenue, and shalt burn··up the city with fire, and all the spoil of it, all of it, for Jehovah thy God; and it shall be a mound of eternity; it shall not be built any more.

18 And there shall not stick anything of the devoted··thing* to thy hand; so··that Jehovah may turn··back from the fierceness of His anger, and give thee compassion, and have··compassion on thee, and cause thee to multiply, as He has promised to thy fathers;

19 when thou shalt obey the voice of Jehovah thy God, to keep all His commandments which I command thee today, to do what is upright in the eyes of Jehovah thy God.

Explanation of Deuteronomy 13

Napsal(a) Alexander Payne

Verses 1-5. No doctrine is to be listened to which tends to draw away the mind from the Lord's Divine Humanity.
