Verse 43. There are doctrines adapted for those states in which goodness and truth are vastated in the mind in which the soul depends upon truths and faith as all-important, and for those in which the soul is endeavouring to carry out what it knows in the natural life, in which works are considered all-important. And for the more perfect states in the natural principle when the soul endeavours to act from spiritual motives and from the new regenerate will. [Note (verses 41-43).—These verses seem to indicate that doctrines are provided from the Word suited to the states and capacities of all, and even if a soul should act against and destroy what is of true charity, still if this is done from error and from mistaken religious tenets conscientiously believed, no guilt will be imputed to him. And if the soul is in doubt as to what are good and truth, let him take refuge in the doctrines of truth as far as they have been revealed to him in the Word, and abide therein, and his spiritual life will be preserved.]
