1 Souviens-toi, ô Eternel! de ce qui nous est arrivé; regarde et vois notre opprobre.

2 Notre héritage a été renversé par des étrangers, nos maisons par des forains.

3 Nous sommes devenus [comme] des orphelins qui sont sans pères, et nos mères sont comme des veuves.

4 Nous avons bu notre eau pour de l’argent, et notre bois nous a été mis à prix.

5 Nous avons été poursuivis l’épée sur la gorge. Nous nous sommes donnés beaucoup de mouvement, [et] nous n’avons point eu de repos.

6 Nous avons étendu la main aux Egyptiens [et] aux Assyriens pour avoir suffisamment de pain.

7 Nos pères ont péché, et ne sont plus; [et] nous avons porté leurs iniquités.

8 Les esclaves ont dominé sur nous, [et] personne ne nous a délivrés de leurs mains.

9 Nous amenions notre pain au péril de notre vie, à cause de l’épée du désert.

10 Notre peau a été noircie comme un four, à cause de l’ardeur véhémente de la faim.

11 Ils ont humilié les femmes dans Sion, et les vierges dans les villes de Juda.

12 Les principaux ont été pendus par leur main; et on n’a porté aucun respect à la personne des Anciens.

13 Ils ont pris les jeunes gens pour moudre, et les enfants sont tombés sous le bois.

14 Les Anciens ont cessé de se trouver aux portes, et les jeunes gens de chanter.

15 La joie de notre cœur est cessée, et notre danse est tournée en deuil.

16 La couronne de notre tête est tombée. Malheur maintenant à nous parce que nous avons péché!

17 C’est pourquoi notre cœur est languissant. A cause de ces choses nos yeux sont obscurcis.

18 A cause de la montagne de Sion qui est désolée; les renards n’en bougent point.

19 [Mais] toi, ô Eternel! tu demeures éternellement, et ton trône est d’âge en âge.

20 Pourquoi nous oublierais-tu à jamais? pourquoi nous délaisserais-tu si longtemps?

21 Convertis-nous à toi, ô Eternel! et nous serons convertis; renouvelle nos jours comme ils étaient autrefois.

22 Mais tu nous as entièrement rejetés, tu t’es extrêmement courroucé contre nous.
