1 Siis tulid kõik Iisraeli suguharud Taaveti juurde Hebronisse ja rääkisid ning ütlesid: 'Vaata, me oleme sinu luu ja liha.

2 Juba varem, kui Saul oli veel meie kuningas, olid sina Iisraeli väljaviijaks ja tagasitoojaks. Sinule on Issand öelnud: Sina pead hoidma mu rahvast Iisraeli kui karjane ja sina pead olema Iisraeli vürst!'

3 Ja kõik Iisraeli vanemad tulid kuninga juurde Hebronisse ning kuningas Taavet tegi Hebronis Issanda ees nendega lepingu; siis nad võidsid Taaveti Iisraeli kuningaks.

4 Taavet oli kuningaks saades kolmkümmend aastat vana; ta valitses nelikümmend aastat.

5 Hebronis valitses ta Juuda üle seitse aastat ja kuus kuud; ja Jeruusalemmas valitses ta kolmkümmend kolm aastat kogu Iisraeli ja Juuda üle.

6 Kui kuningas läks oma meestega Jeruusalemma selle maa elanike jebuuslaste vastu, ütlesid need Taavetile: 'Siia sisse sa ei pääse, sest pimedad ja lonkurid kihutavad su tagasi!' See pidi tähendama, et Taavet sinna ei pääse.

7 Aga Taavet vallutas Siioni linnuse, mis nüüd on Taaveti linn.

8 Ja Taavet oli sel päeval öelnud: 'Igaüks, kes lööb jebuuslasi, tabagu veejuhtmes neid 'lonkureid ja pimedaid', keda Taaveti hing vihkab.' Sellepärast öeldakse: 'Pime ja lonkaja ei pääse kotta.'

9 Ja Taavet asus linnusesse ning nimetas selle Taaveti linnaks. Ja Taavet ehitas ümberringi linna, kantsist alates siselinna suunas.

10 Ja Taavet läks üha vägevamaks, sest Issand, vägede Jumal, oli temaga.

11 Ja Hiiram, Tüürose kuningas, läkitas Taaveti juurde saadikud seedripuudega, samuti puuseppi ja müürseppi; ja nemad ehitasid Taavetile koja.

12 Taavet mõistis, et Issand oli kinnitanud tema Iisraeli kuningaks ja et ta oli ülendanud tema kuningriiki oma Iisraeli rahva pärast.

13 Ja Taavet võttis veel rohkem liignaisi ja naisi Jeruusalemmast, pärast seda kui ta Hebronist oli tulnud; ja Taavetile sündis veelgi poegi ja tütreid.

14 Ja need olid nende nimed, kes temale Jeruusalemmas sündisid: Sammua, Soobab, Naatan ja Saalomon;

15 Jibhar, Elisua, Nefeg ja Jaafia;

16 Elisama, Eljada ja Elifelet.

17 Aga kui vilistid kuulsid, et Taavet oli võitud Iisraeli kuningaks, siis läksid kõik vilistid Taavetit otsima. Kui Taavet seda kuulis, siis läks ta linnusesse.

18 Ja vilistid tulid ning luusisid Refaimi orus.

19 Taavet küsis siis Issandalt, öeldes: 'Kas pean minema vilistite vastu? Kas sa annad nad minu kätte?' Ja Issand ütles Taavetile: 'Mine, sest ma annan tõesti vilistid su kätte!'

20 Siis tuli Taavet Baal-Peratsimi, ja Taavet lõi neid seal ning ütles: 'Issand on murdnud mu vaenlased minu ees, otsekui oleks vesi läbi murdnud!' Seepärast pandi sellele paigale nimeks Baal-Peratsim.

21 Nad jätsid sinna oma ebajumalad, ja Taavet ja ta mehed võtsid need kaasa.

22 Aga vilistid tulid jälle ja luusisid Refaimi orus.

23 Ja Taavet küsis Issandalt, ja tema vastas: 'Ära mine! Piira nad tagant ümber ja tule neile kallale baakapõõsaste poolt!

24 Kui sa kuuled baakapõõsaste ladvus otsekui astumise kahinat, siis kiirusta, sest siis on Issand su ees välja läinud vilistite leeri lööma!'

25 Ja Taavet tegi nõnda, nagu Issand teda käskis, ja lõi vilisteid Gebast kuni Geseri teelahkmeni.
