1 約拿不悅約拿對這事非常不高興,並且發起怒來,

2 就向耶和華禱告,:“耶和華啊!我還在本國的時候,不是這樣說過嗎?我知道你是有恩典有憐憫的神,不輕易發怒,並且有豐盛的慈愛,轉意不降災禍,所以我才急忙逃往他施去。

3 耶和華啊!現在求你取去我的性命吧,因為我死了比活著還。”

4 安排一棵蓖麻耶和華回答:“你這樣發怒對不對呢?”

5 約拿出了城,在城東下;他在那裡搭了一座棚,在棚蔭之下,要那城究竟怎樣。

6 耶和華安排一棵蓖麻,使它長起來高過約拿,成了陰影遮蓋他的,免他受苦;約拿因這棵蓖麻,就歡暢。

7 次日黎明的時候,安排一條子,蛀蝕這棵蓖麻,蓖麻就枯槁了。

8 日出的時候,又安排炎熱的東。烈日曬在約拿的上,以致發昏,他就為自己求:“我了比活著還。”

9 約拿:“你因這棵蓖麻這樣發怒,對不對呢?”約拿:“我發怒以至於死都是對的。”

10 教訓約拿耶和華:“這棵蓖麻,不是你栽種的,也不是你使它長大的,一夜長成,一夜死去,你尚且愛惜它,

11 何況這尼尼微城,其中不曉得分辨左右手的有十萬多人,並且有許多牲畜,我怎能不愛惜呢?”
