Leviticus 11

Study

And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,

Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, These are the animals which you shall eat out··of all the beasts that are on the earth.

All dividing the hoof, and the cloven hoofs being··cloven, and brings··up the cud, among the beast, it you shall eat.

Surely this you shall not eat, from that which brings··up the cud, and from that which divides the hoof: as the camel, for it brings··up the cud, but divides not the hoof; it is unclean for you.

And the rabbit, for it brings··up the cud, but divides not the hoof; it is unclean for you.

And the hare, for it brings··up the cud, but divides not the hoof; it is unclean for you.

And the swine, though it divide the hoof, and the cloven hoof be··cloven, yet it chews not the cud; it is unclean for you.

Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcass you shall not touch; they are unclean to you.

These you shall eat of all that are in the waters; all that has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the brooks, them you shall eat.

And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the brooks, of all crawling things in the waters, and of any living soul which is in the waters, they are detestable to you;

and they shall be detestable to you; of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall detest.

All that has no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be detestable to you.

And these you shall detest of the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are detestable; the eagle, and the peres, and the ozniyah*,

and the kite, and the ayah according··to its kind;

every raven according··to its kind;

and the daughter of the owl, and the night··hawk, and the woodpecker, and the hawk according··to his kind,

and the little··owl, and the cormorant, and the screech··owl,

and the swan, and the spoonbill, and the gier··eagle,

and the stork, the heron according··to her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

Every crawling flying thing, walking on four, it shall be detestable to you.

Only these may you eat from every flying crawling thing that goes upon four, which have legs above their feet, to hop with them upon the earth;

even these of them you may eat; the locust according··to his kind, and the rock··locust according··to his kind, and the hargol* according··to his kind, and the grasshopper according··to his kind.

But every other* flying crawling thing, which has four feet, it is detestable to you.

And for these you shall be··unclean; anything that touches the carcass of them shall be··unclean until the evening.

And whoever carries anything of the carcass of them shall wash his garments, and be··unclean until the evening.

The carcasses of every beast that divides the hoof, but it is not cloven to be··cloven, and it brings· not ·up the cud, they are unclean for you; all who touch them shall be··unclean.

And whatever goes upon his paws*, among all animals that go on all four, those are unclean to you; whoever touches their carcass shall··be··unclean until the evening.

And he that bears the carcass of them shall wash his garments, and be··unclean until the evening; they are unclean to you.

And these shall be unclean to you among the crawling things that crawls on the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise according··to its kind,

and the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

These are unclean to you among all the crawling things; whoever touches them, in their death, he shall be··unclean until the evening.

And all on which any of them shall fall in their death, it shall be··unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or garment, or skin, or sack, whatever vessel it be, in which any use* is done, it must be brought into water, and it shall be··unclean until the evening; and it shall be··clean.

And every pottery vessel, into the midst of which falls of them, all that is in its midst shall be··unclean; and you shall break it.

Of all food which may be eaten, that on which such water comes shall··be··unclean; and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall··be··unclean.

And every thing upon which any part of their carcass falls shall be··unclean; even an oven or a furnace shall be torn··down; they are unclean, and shall be unclean to you.

Surely a fountain and pit, a reservoir of waters, shall be clean; but that which touches their carcass shall be··unclean.

And if any part of their carcass fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.

But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcass fall upon it, it shall be unclean to you.

And if a beast, which is for you for food, die, he who touches its carcass shall be··unclean until the evening.

And he that eats of the carcass of it shall wash his garments, and be··unclean until the evening; and he that bears the carcass of it shall wash his garments, and be··unclean until the evening.

And any crawling thing that crawls upon the earth shall be detestable; it shall not be eaten.

Anything that goes on the belly, and anything that goes on four, even··to anything that has··many feet, as··to any crawling thing crawling upon the earth, them you shall not eat; for they are detestable.

Make not your soul to be··detestable with any crawling thing that crawls; and you shall not defile yourselves with them and be defiled by them.

For I am Jehovah your God; and you shall sanctify yourselves and you shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall you defile your soul with any crawling thing that creeps on the earth.

For I am Jehovah who brings· you ·up from the land of Egypt, to be for you for God; and you shall be holy, for I am holy.

This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living soul that creeps in the waters, and of every soul that crawls upon the earth;

to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.
