The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,

to whom the word of Jehovah was in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

And it was, in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, was finished, until the exile of Jerusalem in the fifth month.

And the word of Jehovah was to me, saying,

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest··out from the womb I sanctified thee; I gave thee as a prophet for the nations.

And I said, Alas, Lord Jehovih*! Behold, I know not how to speak; for a lad am I.

And Jehovah said to me, Say not, a lad am I; for thou shalt go to all to whom I shall send thee, and all that I command thee thou shalt speak.

Fear not their faces; for I am with thee to rescue thee, says Jehovah.

And Jehovah put··forth His hand and touched my mouth. And Jehovah said to me, Behold, I have given My words into thy mouth.

See, I have appointed thee this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, to pluck··up, and to tear··down, and to cause to perish and to break··down, to build and to plant.

And the word of Jehovah was to me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, The stick of an almond tree is what I see.

And Jehovah said to me, Thou hast done··well to see; for I will watch over My word to do it.

And the word of Jehovah was to me a second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething* pot; and its face is facing toward the north.

And Jehovah said to me, Out··of the north the evil shall be opened upon all those who dwell··in the land.

For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, says Jehovah; and they shall come, and they shall put a man his throne at* the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its walls all around, and against all the cities of Judah.

And I will speak My judgments against all their evil, who have forsaken Me, and have burned··incense to other gods, and worshipped the deeds of their own hands.

And thou, gird thy loins, and arise, and speak to them all that I command thee; be· not ·dismayed from their faces, lest I dismay thee to their faces.

And, behold, I have given thee today for a fortified city, and for an iron pillar, and for walls of bronze against all the land, against the kings of Judah, against her princes, against her priests, and against the people of the land.

And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, says Jehovah, to rescue thee.
