1 Samuel 2

Study

1 And Hannah prayed and said;
My heart triumphs in Jehovah,
my horn is exalted in Jehovah.
My mouth is enlarged over my enemies;
for I am··glad in Thy salvation.

2 There is none holy as Jehovah;
for there is none except Thee;
There is no rock as our God.

3 Do not multiply words*; speak ye what is lofty, what is lofty;
let antiquity come··out from your mouth;
for a God of knowledge is Jehovah,
and for Him actions are··measured··precisely.

4 The bows of the mighty are dismayed,
and they who stumbled are girded with force.

5 The satiated have hired out themselves for bread;
and the hungry ceased to hunger,
until the barren has given··birth to seven,
and she who has many sons languishes.

6 Jehovah makes··to die and makes··to··live;
He brings··down to hell and brings··up.

7 Jehovah dispossesses and He makes rich;
He makes··low, He also exalts.

8 He raises··up the poor out··of the dust;
He lifts··up the needy from the dunghill,
to make them sit with nobles,
and to make them inherit the throne of glory;
for the bases of the earth are Jehovah’s,
and He has put the world on them.

9 He will keep the feet of His merciful ones,
and the wicked shall be made still in the darkness,
for by power a man shall not prevail.

10 They who strive with Jehovah shall be dismayed;
He will thunder against them in the heavens;
Jehovah will make··judgment on the ends of the earth.
And He shall give strength to His king,
and exalt the horn of His anointed.

11 And Elkanah went to Ramah unto his house, and the lad was ministering unto Jehovah before Eli the priest.

12 And the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not Jehovah,

13 nor the judgment of the priest with the people. Every man sacrificed a sacrifice, and the lad of the priest came, as the flesh was cooking, and the fork with three teeth was in his hand;

14 and he smote into the laver, or into the container, or into the cauldron, or into the pan; all that the fork brought··up the priest took for himself. Thus they did to all Israel that came thither in Shiloh.

15 Also before they burnt· the fat ·for··incense, then a lad of the priest came and said to the man sacrificing, Give flesh to roast for the priest, and he will not take cooked flesh from thee, but raw*.

16 And if the man said to him, Burning··for··incense, let them burn··for··incense the fat as today, and take for thyself according··to the longing of thy soul, then he would say, No, but thou shalt give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.

17 And the sin of the lads was very great before Jehovah, for the men disdained the gift··offering of Jehovah.

18 But Samuel ministered before Jehovah, a lad girt with a linen ephod.

19 And his mother made for him a little mantle, and brought· it ·up to him from year to year*, when she came··up with her husband to sacrifice the yearly sacrifice*.

20 And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife and said, May Jehovah set for thee seed of this woman, in the stead of the petition which was petitioned of Jehovah. And they went to his place.

21 Then Jehovah visited Hannah, and she conceived, and gave··birth··to three sons and two daughters. And the lad Samuel grew··up with Jehovah.

22 And Eli was· very ·old, and heard all that his sons did to all Israel; and that they lay with the women ministering at the entrance of the Tabernacle of the congregation.

23 And he said to them, Why do you do these things? For I am hearing of your evil things from all these people.

24 No, my sons; for it is not a good report that I hear; you make Jehovah’s people to transgress.

25 If a man sin against a man, God shall judge him; but if a man sin against Jehovah, who shall pray for him? But they hearkened not to the voice of their father; for Jehovah delighted to make them die.

26 But the lad Samuel went and grew··up, and was good even with Jehovah and even with men.

27 And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him; Thus says Jehovah, Revealing, did I not reveal myself unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?

28 And did I not choose him out··of all the tribes of Israel, for a priest for Me, to go··up to My altar, to burn· incense ·for··incense, to bear an ephod before Me? And did I not give to the house of thy father all the fire··offerings of the sons of Israel?

29 Why do you kick at My sacrifice and at My gift··offering which I commanded in My abode, and glorifiest thy sons above Me, to nourish yourselves from the firstlings of all the gift··offerings of Israel My people?

30 Therefore Jehovah the God of Israel says, Saying I said, Thy house and the house of thy father should walk before My face even··to eternity; But now, says Jehovah, far··be··it from Me, for they who glorify Me will I glorify, and they who despise Me shall be··vile.

31 Behold, the days come, and I will hew··off thine arm and the arm of the house of thy father, so that there shall not be* an old man in thy house.

32 And thou shalt look on the adversary of the abode, in all wherein He has done··good to Israel; and there shall not be an old man in thy house all the days.

33 And a man of thee whom I shall not cut··off from My altar shall be to consume thine eyes and to sadden thy soul. And all the increase of thy house shall··die as young men.

34 And this shall be the sign unto thee that shall come upon thy two sons, upon Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall··die, the two of them.

35 And I will raise··up for Me a faithful priest who shall do according··to what is in My heart and in My soul; and I will build him a faithful house, and He shall walk before My anointed all the days.

36 And it shall be, that everyone who remains in thy house shall come to bow··down to him for a scrap of silver and a loaf of bread, and shall say, Attach me, I pray thee, to one of the priesthoods, that I may eat a morsel of bread.
