On the Athanasian Creed #2

2. It is the doctrine of the Church that the above passage treats of the Coming of the Lord. Thence it is that there have been opened, by the Lord, arcana 1 concerning heaven and hell, man's life after death, the Word and the last judgment. All these things have been written down in the Latin language and sent to all the Archbishops and Bishops of this kingdom [of Great Britain] and to the Nobility. So far, not a voice has been heard. This is a sign that the things which pertain to heaven and the Church do not affect them interiorly. It also shows that it is now the very end of the Church and indeed that the Church no longer exists. For the Church exists where the Lord is worshipped and the Word is read with enlightenment. 2 . . . Summaries of the truth presented in the little works referred to may be seen at the end of this work.

Footnotes:

1. Secret; hidden things: from Latin, arcanum (plural, arcana).

2. Similar passages in the Writings referring to the Church being "where the Lord is worshipped and the Word is read" are to be found, for example in:

Arcana Coelestia 10761: "That is called the Church where the Lord is acknowledged and where the Word is."

Apocalypse Explained 252:2: "The Church specificially is where the Word is and where the Lord is known through the Word."

The Last Judgment 55: "... for the Church exists where the Lord is worshipped and the Word is read."

The meaning of the last phrase in the Latin text, however, is obscure. It may have been a note written by Swedenborg to remind himself of a point to be amplified when he came to write the work in full, perhaps a reference to the need for self-examination as the fundamental of actual repentance (True Christian Religion 528), repentance being the first thing of the Church with man (True Christian Religion 510), and the need for regular self-examination (Conjugial Love 529 and Apocalypse Revealed 224:6). - Tr.

251. I will come in to him, signifies conjunction. This is evident from the signification of "coming in," as being, in reference to the Lord, to be conjoined with Him (See Arcana Coelestia 3914, 3918, 6782, 6783). The Lord is conjoined with those who receive Him in heart and life, because the Lord enters or flows in into life; He enters or flows in only with those who are in a life of spiritual love, or in a life of charity; for charity is spiritual love. When that love makes a man's life, the Lord enters or flows in through it into the truths of faith, and causes man to see, or to know them; from this man has the spiritual affection of truth. It is a great mistake to suppose that the Lord enters or flows in into faith alone or into faith separate from charity with man; in such a faith there is no life, for it is like the breathing of the lungs without the inflow from the heart, which breathing would be only a lifeless movement, for the breathing of the lungs is made alive by the inflow from the heart, as is well known.

This makes clear by what way the Divine proceeding from the Lord is admitted, namely, by the way of the heart, that is, of the love; whether you say the heart or the love, it is the same as the life of the spirit therefrom. Love makes man's life, as anyone may know and see if he is only willing to give thought to it; for what is a man without love? Is he not a stock? Therefore, as the love is so is the man. Love is willing and doing, for what man loves he wills and does. An idea of the good of charity and of the truth of faith may be formed from the sun's light and heat. When the light that proceeds from the sun is conjoined with heat, as in spring and summer time, then all things of the earth bud and blossom; but when there is no heat in the light, as in winter time, then all things of the earth become torpid and die. Spiritual light also is the truth of faith, and spiritual heat is the good of charity. From this an idea may be formed of the man of the church; that when faith with him is conjoined to charity he is like a garden and a paradise; but when faith in him is not conjoined to charity he is like a desert, or a land covered with snow.

6847. 'The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' means the Divine itself and the Divine Human, thus the Lord. This is clear from the representation of 'Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob' as the Lord's Divine itself and His Divine Human. For the fact that 'Abraham' represents the Lord's Divine itself, 'Isaac' His Divine Rational, and 'Jacob' His Divine Natural, see 1893, 2011, 2066, 2072, 2083, 2630, 3194, 3210, 3245, 3251, 3305 (end), 3439, 3704, 4180, 4286, 4538, 6425, 6804. By 'God' is meant that which is Divine, and by those three names that which is representative; therefore those attributes within the Lord are what 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' is used to mean.
